About the Role
Provides technical support for a variety of undergraduate and graduate laboratory courses in Biological Sciences, especially those in organismal biology and natural history (biology, evolution, anatomy, morphology, taxonomy) of animals (i.e., insect biology, invertebrate and vertebrate biology) as well as some other courses/disciplines. Provides technical assistance and guidance to faculty, sessional instructors, teaching assistants, students, and researchers on the proper operation, safety protocols, and technical procedures of laboratory and field equipment. Procures, prepares, organizes, sets up and maintains laboratory equipment, materials and specimens/dissections for use in student demonstrations and experiments; prepares and dispenses complex reagents and stock solutions; orders and maintains live/perishable specimens. Monitors and maintains the use of department Insectary Facilities, providing training and technical consultation to new users. Identifies, prepares, catalogues, and analyzes comparative specimens for teaching collections. Monitors and maintains the Teaching Collections facility and the large and diverse holdings of natural history specimens (i.e., insects, marine invertebrates, vertebrates, bones/skeletons, skins, fossils) for teaching and community engagement. Provides recommendations and contributes to the elaboration of policies and plans relating to collections, conservation, and displays. Maintains reciprocal relationships with Department faculty and staff, internal and external biologists, curators, students, and other to support the stewardship and integrity of the collection. Encourages use of Teaching Collection in research, educational programs, and exhibitions on and off-campus.
