Full Time Occasional Teacher (D.O.T.) Position at Heritage Academy
Job Summary:
We are seeking a flexible, reliable, and compassionate Full Time Occasional Teacher (D.O.T.) to join our team at a private school that specializes in supporting neurodiverse learners from grades 1 through 12. The DOT will provide classroom and duty coverage during teacher absences, ensuring continuity of instruction and a safe, inclusive learning environment for students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver lessons and implement classroom activities as directed by the absent teacher or provided lesson plans.
- Modify instruction and classroom approaches as needed to meet the individual needs of students, with sensitivity to varying learning styles and sensory needs.
- Maintain a positive, supportive, and structured classroom environment that promotes student engagement, self-regulation, and participation.
- Provide supervision during classroom instruction, transitions, recess, and lunch, as required.
- Communicate effectively with educational assistants, support staff, and administration to ensure consistency and support for all learners.
- Accurately complete any required documentation (e.g., attendance, incident reports)
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold the school’s values and standards at all times.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field preferred; current or pending teacher certification is an asset.
- Experience working with neurodiverse children and/or adolescents, particularly students with autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, or developmental delays.
- Familiarity with inclusive education practices and trauma-informed approaches.
- Excellent classroom management and communication skills.
- Adaptability, patience, and a student-centered mindset.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a private or specialized education setting.
- Knowledge of IEP implementation and accommodations.
- Training in assistive technology, sensory strategies, or behaviour management tools (e.g., Zones of Regulation, PECS, visual schedules).
