Job Summary
Counselling Services, as part of Student Wellness, is committed to fostering student success, engagement, and well-being through direct clinical services, training and mentorship, consultative services, crisis and emergency response, and programming development, implementation and evaluation. The SWEL fosters service and program innovation and leads a number of strategic relationships with both internal university and external community stakeholders in order to deliver departmental, divisional, and institutional planning initiatives and goals.
The counsellor embedded in Faculty of Law as one aspect of the Amicus program’s personal support component will provide individual and group counselling to UVic Law students with concerns in the personal domain (e.g., mental health; relationship), career domain (e.g., balance between demanding Law curriculum and personal well-being), and learning domain (e.g., academic concession considerations; trauma-informed law curriculum delivery and law professional practice). The counsellor works with individual student clients using a brief intervention model, which attends to developmental challenges and is delivered in a culturally responsive way in order to meet the needs of a diverse post-secondary student population.
In addition to direct clinical services to students, the counsellor will provide consultative and outreach services to staff and faculty within the Faculty of Law and, if needed, the larger UVic campus community. As a part of Amicus program, the counsellor will participate in Faculty wide initiatives (e.g., Orientation), deliver wellness sessions in classroom, and provide input to wellness programming for the Faculty. Depending on experience, the counsellor may contribute to clinical supervision of graduate students in our Advanced Counselling/ Psychotherapy Practicum program who are deemed appropriate to specialize in embedded counselling service delivery to Faculty of Law.
It is very important that the counsellor works collaboratively with administrative and clinical teams of Counselling Services, and also with administrative and other support staff of the Amicus program of the Faculty of Law. The counsellor strives to develop effective working relationships with staff and faculty with the Faculty of Law and other university members. The counsellor will report to the Dean or Dean’s delegate at the Faculty of Law and Director of Counselling Services and will receive clinical supervision from Counselling Services. Note that the Associate Dean of Faculty of Law oversees the operation of the Amicus program.
