Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. The Social Media Lead is responsible for managing the Durham District School Board's (DDSB) social media presence to inform, engage, and inspire students, families, staff, and the broader community.
Working with the Communications Manager and Strategists, this role spearheads the development of platform-specific strategies and content across channels such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, and others — ensuring alignment with DDSB's mission, priorities, and brand. As the voice of the Board on social media, the Social Media Lead manages community interactions, drives engagement, monitors sentiment, and continuously evaluates performance to optimize reach and impact.

- Strategy & Planning
- Working with the Communications Manager and Strategists, lead the development and evolution of DDSB's social media strategy, aligned to communications priorities, strategic plan, and audience needs.
- Develop and manage an integrated content calendar in collaboration with the Communications team to ensure a steady stream of timely, relevant, and engaging content.
- Provide platform guidance, identify emerging trends, and recommend new tools or channels that support engagement goals.
- Create compelling, student- and family-centered content (visual, written, video, interactive) for various platforms.
- Collaborate with schools, departments, and students to source stories and user-generated content that reflects DDSB's diversity, learning, and community.
- Ensure all content adheres to DDSB brand, accessibility (AODA), and equity standards.
- Actively monitor and respond to questions, comments, and messages across social platforms, providing timely, empathetic, and appropriate responses.
- Escalate concerns or inquiries to relevant departments, ensuring follow-through and issue resolution.
- Foster a positive, respectful online tone that reflects DDSB's values and supports community trust.
- Monitor social media sentiment, trends, and issues relevant to public education, the region, and the DDSB brand.
- Provide real-time insights to the Communications team and senior leadership, including risk identification or reputational concerns.
- Track and analyze performance using tools like Meta Business Suite, Sprout Social, or native platform insights.
- Provide regular reports and recommendations based on KPIs (e.g., engagement rates, impressions, reach, response time, follower growth).
- Test and optimize content types, timing, and format based on data-driven insights.
- Exceptional written and visual storytelling skills tailored to digital platforms.
- Strong knowledge of social media strategy, platform algorithms, and best practices.
- Ability to manage multiple platforms and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with photography, video editing, graphic design (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Sound judgment, tact, and discretion, especially in handling sensitive or high-profile issues.
- Analytical mindset with proficiency in reporting and performance measurement.
- Awareness of equity, inclusion, and cultural responsiveness in digital communications.
Education
- University degree or College diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Digital Media, or a related field. Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in a communications or digital marketing role, with a focus on social media strategy, content creation, and community engagement.
- Experience managing branded social media accounts in an organization or public-sector setting.
- Experience working with analytics tools and scheduling platforms (e.g., Hootsuite, Sprout, Buffer, Meta Business Suite).
Additional Requirements
- Provide a current Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening upon hire.
- This is a contract position that ends June 26, 2026
