About the role

Control Systems Software Developer One Year Term

The Canadian Light Source is looking for a motivated software developer to help our controls and instrumentation team migrate a C-based control system from older Linux distributions to Debian 12. This is a one-year term position.

Who we are:

The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is a national research facility located on the beautiful grounds of the University of Saskatchewan. We are a third-generation synchrotron operating 22 beamlines. The CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users working on everything from dinosaur skins to mine remediation.

Where you would fit:

The controls team are responsible for the integration of software and hardware for distributed control and feedback across all systems in our facility, from our particle accelerator, through beamline motors, to x-ray detectors at scientific end-stations. You would help us modernize our operations by

  • Communicating with scientific staff and other controls team members to gather specific requirements for each target machine
  • Working with the Systems Technology department to procure new computers (physical or virtual) and any specialized computer hardware
  • Porting control system software, GUIs and scripts to the new environment
  • Helping staff with any concerns and changes to workflow during this transition
  • Troubleshooting problems that occur during and after upgrades
  • Keeping thorough documentation of activities and migration status

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Hands-on experience in software development particularly in a scientific or engineering setting
  • Solid working knowledge of Linux as a development environment
  • Experience with C and shell scripts.

Qualifications Considered an Asset:

  • Experience with C++ or Python
  • Some knowledge of device communications such as serial ports, TCP/IP, UDP or other protocols
  • Familiarity with software tools such as integrated development environments, automated builds, source code control and issue tracking
  • Experience with EPICS (Experimental Physics Industrial Control System), or other distributed control framework

This position would be a great opportunity for developers in the Saskatoon area who are early in their careers and enjoy collaborative, project-based work.

The position is not approved for remote work as the project needs to be done on-site.

Compensation: Your starting salary will be based on your qualifications and experience. (Our comprehensive benefits package includes four weeks of vacation to start, health & dental benefits, life insurance, a pension plan, and a health spending account.) We are not offering relocation assistance for this term position.

Salary Range: $60,000-$80,000 depending on the level of experience.

To Apply: Please submit your resume with cover letteronline at lightsource.ca/careers. Applications will be accepted until TBD. While all applicants are thanked for their interest, only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
