Friends of Ruby is dedicated to supporting the well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth aged 16-29 through mental health services, social programs, and housing. We operate a Youth Drop-In Centre, offering barrier-free counselling, hot meals, and community programming, and a Transitional Home, providing emergency and long-term housing with life-skills support.

About the Role
As a Food Service Coordinator, you will be responsible for:

Meal Planning and Food Preparation - Plan, prepare, and safely store nutritious meals for large groups, ensuring compliance with public health regulations while maintaining a consistent supply of food and snacks for residents.

Program Development and Facilitation - Design and lead educational food programs that promote cooking skills, healthy eating, food security, and grocery budgeting, while actively engaging residents and collaborating with external community partners.

Organization and Administration - Strong organizational and time management skills to oversee food budgets, inventory, donations, and program data, while maintaining a clean and functional kitchen environment and coordinating necessary supplies.

Interpersonal and Community Engagement - Build positive relationships with residents, staff, and community agencies, demonstrating effective communication, teamwork, and the ability to foster inclusive participation across diverse populations.

Commitment to Equity, Inclusion, and Safety - Uphold principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Anti-Oppression by creating welcoming environments, using inclusive language, following safety and sectoral standards, and ensuring equitable access to food and support services.
What You Bring
-
Degree or diploma in a relevant field (e.g., Culinary, Nutrition, Social Services) and/or equivalent work experience.

Minimum 2 years of experience in food handling, cooking, and meal planning, ideally in a drop-in, shelter, or community setting.

Current, valid Food Handler Certification is required.

Ability to work independently, collaboratively in a team, and with community partners

Strong communication and customer service skills; able to multitask, stay calm under pressure, and exercise sound judgment and adaptability.

Knowledge of anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices; skilled in conflict resolution, crisis intervention, harm reduction, and de-escalation.

Lived and/or professional experience supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ and marginalized communities, using community development and trauma-informed approaches.

CPR/First Aid and CPI certification considered an asset.

The Friends of Ruby Drop-In Centre at 489 Queen St. East is a welcoming and supportive space in downtown Toronto for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth aged 16-29 to create community and access free resources and services. We are open Monday to Friday from 11 AM to 6:30 PM. The Drop-In Center offers meals, supplemental groceries, activities, support groups and community. We offer barrier-free one-on-one counselling, support with gender identity and sexual orientation, and help to access housing, health care, and employment.
Our Drop-In Center is Located at 489 Queen St. East, LL01
Friends of Ruby was founded in 2014 by Egale Canada as Egale Youth Services to meet the needs of 2SLGBQTIA+ youth in the Greater Toronto Area. In 2019, Friends of Ruby became an independent charity.
