We are looking for a highly motivated Associate, Investment Risk Support (Private Markets) to join our team! Exciting opportunity for an Associate to join our Private Asset Risk Advisory team! Reporting to the Director, Investment Risk Advisory (Private Markets), you will be responsible for supporting, from a risk perspective, portfolio and investment decisions in Private Equity, Real Estate & Infrastructure.
The Associate will be responsible for assisting in deal risk assessment, portfolio monitoring and management of systematic and idiosyncratic risks within risk limits, producing and enhancing customized quarterly investment risk and climate stress testing reports to communicate risk effectively to the investment teams and senior leadership at IMCO. You will also be collaborating with peers across risk and private investment teams for new and existing Investment Committees deliverables.
This will require a combination of technical, analytical and organizational skills. The Associate must also have strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills to articulate ideas, issues and recommendations internally. Attention to detail and a drive to improve existing processes are desired.
As a Member of Our Team, You Will be Responsible For:
- Supporting Front Office (“FO”) decision making from a risk perspective, across Private Markets. You will Independently evaluate the qualitative risks of private investments, contribute to assessing the level of risk associated with investment decisions, and ensure risks remain within IMCO clients’ risk appetite and that risk taking is appropriately rewarded, thinking beyond “established” risks. Investment Risk Support will also be responsible for the ongoing monitoring of the portfolio’s risk profile over time.
- Working closely with the Risk Analytics Team and the broader teams to integrate data from various data systems at IMCO.
- Developing relationships with key partners while maintaining an independent assessment of risks.
- Working directly with individual deal teams to understand risks of individual deals and discuss with Director and VP, Investment Risk before investment Committee meetings.
- Providing guidance to investment teams on policy, governance, limits, benchmarking, and risk reporting.
- Contributing to the production, analysis and enhancement of customized quarterly private market investment risk and climate stress testing dashboards by integrating data from systems at IMCO (including the risk, climate and performance systems).
- Monitoring compliance with portfolio mandates and conduct quarterly portfolio reviews assessing the drivers of portfolio performance and largest risk contributors. Identifying significant changes to risk contributors.
- Working cross functionally with teams to support investment strategy reviews, benchmark recommendations, organizational strategy and enterprise planning.
- Contributing to the design, build and enhancement of appropriate risk management approaches for Private Assets, reflecting the global investment activities of the business, and supporting the growth of IMCO.
- Building appropriate models and downside scenarios to measure and monitor risk for all Private Assets, considering both qualitative and quantitative components of investment risks.
- Developing and managing relationships with all stakeholders across the organization to understand operational and business activities and issues, providing expertise and advice. Sharing information, resolving issues, identifying opportunities to leverage resources, and collaborating on projects and initiatives; effectively participating in senior strategic decisions.
What do you need to succeed?
- The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of progressive experience in private market investment risk advisory and/or in the execution or valuation of private market transactions in a global financial institution, asset, investment manager or top tier consulting firm.
- An undergraduate or post-graduate degree in Finance, Economics, Commerce, etc.
- A professional designation or progress towards one (e.g., CFA, CBV, CA, FRM) is an asset.
- Excellent quantitative, analytical, financial modeling, problem-solving, and researching skills with strong attention to detail.
- Understanding of financial markets, valuation, capital structuring, for a broad range of assets, including Infrastructure, Real Estate and Private Equity.
- Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to interact with colleagues at all levels, cultivating partnerships and working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to collaboratively lead and contribute to projects and initiatives impacting Client Services, as well as other enterprise activities.
- Ability to consistently deliver quality outputs in a fast-paced environment, with an ability to work to tight deadlines and the capability to handle multiple projects and ad-hoc requests simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong knowledge of Data Visualization (e.g. PowerBI), databases (SQL) and programming languages (Excel VBA®, Python, and PowerPivot®). Working knowledge of Risk Manager is an asset.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
- Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to explain complex issues in a clear and compelling manner and present information to internal stakeholders.
