Job Overview
We are seeking a reliable and detailed Senior Accountant to join our team. The Senior Accountant plays a key role in supporting accurate and timely financial reporting. This position leads company full cycle accounting including financial reporting reconciliation and preparation. The Senior Accountant is also responsible for departmental costing and reporting in collaboration with Branch Managers and the Operations Manager, as well as overseeing fixed asset accounting and aspects of tax and treasury. The Senior Accountant works closely with the Controller to achieve timely and accurate month end reporting and supports day to day supervision of accounting activities and leading month end close. The Senior Accountant ensures accounting policies and SOPs are adhered to, identifying and leading continuous improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Supervising the delivery of day-to-day activities associated with accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and banking functions while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and adherence to established company policies and SOPs.
- Leading month-end and year-end close activities and supporting team-members in completing assigned tasks by established deadlines.
- Preparing and reviewing balance sheet reconciliations, providing guidance to accounting team members in the preparation of their assigned balance sheet reconciliations.
- Investigating and resolving complex accounting issues and transactions and preparing and processing month-end journal entries.
- Ensuring accurate and timely departmental costing for heavy-duty parts and service operations; identifying, investigating, and reporting on activities impacting gross margins to the Controller; and preparing reports for monthly departmental cost review meetings.
- Identifying, investigating and reporting discrepancies, working with stakeholders to rectify discrepancies and taking action to resolve and prevent future data integrity and process issues.
- Managing accounting for fixed assets including additions, disposals, depreciation, and equipment charge rates.
- Overseeing tax compliance by ensuring the timely and accurate completion of all relevant tax and government filings including GST and PST.
- Participating in the budgeting and cash flow forecasting process by gathering relevant information and preparing reporting.
Experience & Knowledge
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Five (5) years of progressive experience in full-cycle accounting.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or in later stages of the program.
- Understanding of accounting principles (ASPE, IFRS), cost accounting, tax regulations and general operational accounting.
- Proficiency in financial software, business intelligence software and ERP systems.
- Proficiency using excel for financial and accounting purposes leveraging advanced functions.
- Strong work ethic and commitment to accuracy and integrity in accounting activities.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail.
- Effective mentorship, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to lead continuous improvement initiatives.
