About the role

The Edmonton Waste Management Centre (EWMC) is a unique collection of waste processing and research facilities. Owned and operated by the City of Edmonton. The Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility (IPTF) is where waste arrives and is divided into three separate waste streams: organics processing, biofuels production and landfill.

As an Equipment Operator III at our facility, you will apply your equipment operation experience to transfer waste material in a busy, high-traffic area. Success in this position requires strong teamwork and respectful, inclusive communication skills.

What will you do?

  • Operate heavy equipment such as front end loaders, excavators, rotobec grapples and skid-steers
  • Identify, troubleshoot and report any equipment mechanical issues
  • Support general site operations with directing traffic, screening waste, site housekeeping, and snow removal
  • Attend and participate in safety meetings and advise of any health and safety concerns
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade ten (10) or equivalent or higher
  • Two (2) years of experience in equipment operation, including training and experience in equipment listed above

Skills Required for Success:

  • Knowledge surrounding powered mobile equipment
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment skillfully, safely and in conformance with applicable laws, regulations and safety considerations
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions and prepare simple work records
  • Well developed interpersonal communication skills
  • Exhibits strong skills in collaboration, teamwork and fostering a positive work environment
  • Ability to problem solve, adapt to new circumstances and overcome challenges
  • Ability to deal with customers in a courteous and professional manner including the ability to resolve issues with unsatisfied customers

Conditions of Employment:

  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including being fit-tested for and wearing a N95 respirator and steel-toed boots, is a requirement of this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform moderate manual labor in various weather and environmental conditions, including working in on uneven terrain and near dusty or allergenic materials
  • Successful candidates will be required to work shift work. This may include mornings, afternoons and or nights. Rotating shifts may also be implemented
