Part-time term position

20 hours per week, including some evenings and weekends

10 Month School Year Schedule

Term effective September 2, 2025, to June 30, 2026

Job Summary:

The Culture and Community Support Worker is a position that is supported and connected to the Teachers’ Idea Fund and the Valley Gardens Community Connections Program (VGCC). This role will help address student needs, enhance integrated programming, encourage family and student support, and strengthen links within the community with the goal of increased attendance, school connection, and wellbeing. This role will promote the understanding of various cultural backgrounds by working in the school, community and by facilitating after-school activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement after-school programming for students and families with support from the Culture and Community Support Worker and Project Lead on two evenings per week

  • Connect with students and families identified as needing support in attending school, and/or connecting with resources in the VGMS community via phone, email or in person visits

  • Attend bi-weekly meetings with administration and stakeholders

  • Maintain weekly/and as needed communication with community members via email and/or social media notifications

  • Implement, evaluate and participate in a variety of recreation programs

  • Support individual, small and large group mentorship opportunities such as lunch hour programming to support student academic success with the support of the Culture and Community Support Worker

  • Implement activities for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students which include cultural and traditional supports in the classroom, school, or community

  • Network with schools, the community, and students/families

  • Support and build connections with school and divisional initiatives

  • Consult/liaise with the Culture and Community Support Worker and the Project Lead at Valley Gardens Middle School

  • Drive to pick up food and activity supplies as needed

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children and youth is an asset

  • Experience in a school setting with knowledge of educational issues is an asset

  • Experience working with children and families

  • Knowledge and understanding of systemic barriers that may affect students and families

  • Experience working with students/families with diverse backgrounds

  • Experience with Newcomer and Refugee families is an asset

  • Experience working with Indigenous youth and families as well as Indigenous community resources is an asset

  • Knowledge of Microsoft software (TEAMS, Word, Outlook)

  • A valid MB driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle is an asset

  • External applicants must supply a Criminal Record Search and a cleared Child Abuse Registry check upon hire

Skills and abilities

  • Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team

  • Ability to work independently following a plan of action

  • Excellent organizational and oral and written communication skills
