Who are we looking for?

Our Ontario EDO (Engineering Design Organization) is looking for a dynamic and motivated individual to take on the role of Senior Structural Engineer (English/French) to support our facilities projects at Waterloo Office. Also, who can research, design, and construct buildings and structures that are safe and capable of withstanding the elements to which they will be exposed, as well as improving the structural integrity of existing buildings or constructs.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of experience, contribute to and be responsible for all structural engineering aspects of multi-disciplinary projects in various markets and businesses with a strong diverse background in structural design and delivery of Buildings’ projects.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor Construction Works: Oversee and sign off the delivery of works to ensure that construction, maintenance, or improvement works are delivered in accordance with quality, cost, and time requirements. Includes verifying works have been completed to necessary requirements, and confirming contractor obligations have been met.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Conduct research using primary data sources, and select information needed for the analysis of key themes and trends.
  • Engineering Drawings: Create complex engineering drawings to support the communication, evaluation, and implementation of engineering solutions.
  • Engineering Solutions Design: Design engineering solutions and the associated validation process to enable the realization of a design brief (for example, in terms of functionality, performance, aesthetics, and cost) that conforms to organizational and/or regulatory standards.
  • Engineering Standards Specification: Analyze information, draft engineering standards and specifications, and evaluate the effectiveness of those standards within own engineering discipline to ensure work of the required quality is delivered and to inform engineering work in the organization and/or of its suppliers, contractors, and consultants.
  • Technical Developments Recommendation: Discuss and recommend technical developments to improve the quality of the website/portal/applications software and supporting infrastructure to better meet users’ needs.
  • Personal Capability Building: Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching; gain or maintain external professional accreditation, where relevant, to improve performance and fulfill personal potential. Maintain an in-depth understanding of technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
  • Testing: Develop product specifications and design test procedures and standards.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Manage technical troubleshooting projects, ensuring effective diagnosis of technical issues with equipment and experiments and the development of effective solutions.
  • Research: Achieve specific goals for a designated part of a research program. Involves working within established research systems.
  • Project Management: Deliver small- or medium-scale projects while working within an established program management plan.
  • Client & Customer Management (External): Manage relationships with small clients while also helping senior colleagues manage relationships with larger key clients and customers.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario (P.ENG Certification). (Mandatory)
  • Bilingual (fluent in both English and French languages). (Mandatory)

Experience

  • General Experience: Minimum 10 years of diverse structural engineering experience with a focus on facility design type projects.
  • Managerial Experience: Experience of general supervision of more junior colleagues.
  • Excellent understanding of structural systems and practical design experience of designing facility structures/buildings, water/earth retaining structures and shallow and deep foundation systems, to name a few.
  • Conversant with National building Code of Canada - NBCC and provincial building codes, CSA codes for design of steel, concrete, masonry and wood structures.
  • Ability to develop designs to comply with project specific output specifications
  • Strong influencing skills and the ability to develop effective and trustworthy relationships both with project teams and within the organization
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making abilities
  • Strong computer skills including experience in structural analysis and design software such as SAP 2000, ETABS, SAFE, S-FRAME and ROBOT and MS Office
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills with a positive attitude
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

The following skills would be considered an asset for this position:

  • Licensed in the province of Quebec
  • Project management skills and budget and schedule controls
  • Knowledge of BIM 360 and REVIT
