About the role

The Early Childhood Educator (ECE) is responsible for delivering high-quality care and educational programming for children under the age of six in a licensed daycare setting. The ECE nurtures children’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development by creating engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate experiences in a safe and welcoming environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Curriculum Planning & Delivery
  • Designs and implements daily programs that reflect children's interests, developmental levels, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Creates a balanced schedule with active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, and individual/group experiences.
  • Uses play-based learning and responsive strategies like modeling, observing, and reinforcing to guide development.
  1. Individualized Support
  • Observes children to identify interests, abilities, and needs; adapts programming accordingly.
  • Collaborates with families and professionals (e.g., therapists, supported child development consultants) to support children with additional needs.
  1. Child Development Tracking
  • Maintains records on children’s progress, routines, and incidents.
  • Contributes to transition reports and development summaries for school readiness.
  1. Team & Program Development
  • Participates in team planning, staff meetings, and evaluation of daycare programs.
  • Recommends improvements or changes to programming and routines to better meet children’s needs.
  1. Supervision & Mentorship
  • May provide direction to Early Childhood Educator Assistants, practicum students, or volunteers.
  • Helps maintain a consistent and positive tone across the staff team.

Caregiving & Routines

  • Attends to children’s physical needs including diapering, toileting, feeding, dressing, and napping.
  • Promotes health and hygiene routines in accordance with licensing standards.

Health & Safety

  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe physical environment.
  • Identifies and responds to hazards and administers first aid or medications as per policy.

Family Communication

  • Builds strong relationships with families through daily updates, scheduled meetings, and collaborative goal setting.
  • Consults with parents on developmental concerns and invites them to participate in programming.

Other Related Duties

  • Performs other duties consistent with the classification as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Certifications:

  • Valid Early Childhood Education (ECE) Certificate
  • Valid Infant Toddler and/or Special Needs Certificate an asset, but not required.
  • Active ECE License to Practice from the BC ECE Registry
  • Valid Child Care First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening

Training and Experience:

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • This may include:
  • Minimum one (1) year of recent, related experience working as an Early Childhood Educator in a licensed childcare setting with children under the age of six.
  • Experience should include planning and leading age-appropriate activities, supporting children’s developmental needs, and fostering inclusive group care environments.
  • Direct experience working with infants and toddlers, children with extra support needs
  • Knowledge of and experience adhering to BC Child Care Licensing Regulations and relevant safety and documentation protocols.
  • Comfort with documenting observations, progress, and incidents using both written and digital formats.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $25.95 per hour

Expected hours: 30 per week
