Job Summary
The Supervisor, under the direction of the Operations Management Team, will primarily be responsible for supervising unionized hourly employees, including delegation of job assignments and on the job training. This position will primarily be focusing on our stevedoring and rail loading operations, although they may be assigned anywhere required. This position will also assist with inventory reconciliation, inspecting cargo for damage, and overseeing the employees’ operation of heavy equipment, including rail equipment. This hands-on role will also require enforcement of corporate policies and procedures involving performance, conduct, security and health and safety, ensuring the workplace remains safe for all employees.
Job Duties
· Supervise a team of unionized staff members.
· Supervise transloading of materials to and from railcars and trucks and ensure proper procedures are followed. Working with rail equipment required in this position.
· Supervise inventory control in assigned areas to ensure accuracy and meet customer requirements.
· Supervise unloading and discharging processes of cargo vessels with extended discharge schedules, inclusive of weekends. Manage all manpower throughout discharges during vessel season. (overtime required)
· Enforce corporate policies and procedures, including security protocols throughout the terminal to maintain a safe and secure working environment.
· Ensure that employees adhere to all health and safety policies, regulations and legislation, including providing and ensuring use of proper personal protective equipment for every job.
· Ensure that all employees comply with company policies and procedures and legislated requirements.
· Ensure that safe work practices and standard operating procedures are clearly communicated, trained, and followed by all employees.
· Supervise activities and work assignments, communicate priorities, and delegate work accordingly.
· Ensure employees have clear goals and are aware of Company expectations.
· Assist in maintaining shift schedules to ensure sufficient employee coverage.
· Ensure job assignments are accurately recorded for payroll reporting and processing.
· Ensure the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the unionized employees is followed.
· Ability to investigate workplace incidents.
· Administer corrective actions as required.
· Coordination and completion of work orders for equipment repairs as required.
· Assist when required with heavy equipment operations to meet daily initiatives.
· Other duties as assigned.
Competencies
· Ability to efficiently supervise employees and communicate effectively.
· Strong attention to detail.
· Ability to read, write, interpret and communicate written and verbal instructions clearly.
· Proficient computer skills working with email and Microsoft 360 suite.
· Communicating and addressing any concerns or issues identified by team members.
· Continuously monitoring employee productivity and performance.
· Ability to instill positivity within a team and maintain motivation.
· The ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt quickly to changing situations is essential.
· Heavy equipment operation experience preferred.
· Crane certification both overhead and mobile an asset.
· Lifting and rigging experience preferred.
· Experience in a terminal / warehouse / construction site setting is preferred.

About Essex Terminal Railway
Essex Terminal Railway is a short-line or switching railway, strategically located at the Windsor-Detroit gateway and busiest North American border crossing handling 1/3 of all US-Canada trade by volume. Incorporated in 1902, the ETR connects both local and internationally destined freight to CN, CP and CSX providing access to any point in the rail networks in Canada, the USA and Mexico. We also provide service for local companies from the east side of Windsor to Amherstburg, ON. ETR services customers in the industrial, chemical, agribusiness, salt, automotive engines, lumber, scrap and food products sectors. Our sister company, Morterm Ltd., owns and operates the only general cargo terminal in the Port of Windsor, with a rail siding to the terminal. The mainline of the ETR runs in a generally southwest direction for some 35 km (22 miles), in a route that roughly parallels the Detroit River separating Windsor from Detroit, MI, USA.
