This contract union position offers an hourly wage rate of $24.85 to $31.06, 40 hours per week (OPSEU Local 328). Per the Collective Agreement, OPSEU members have first consideration.

Position S****ummary
Under the direction of the NSSRC Operations Manager, the Operations Technician - Recreation is responsible for various maintenance and customer service duties with the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre. This includes coordinating, expediating, and/or performing operator, maintenance, repair and administrative work related to the recreation facility and equipment, as assigned including ensuring efficient plant operation and building cleanliness.
Duties and Responsibilities
Maintenance Operations Management
- Operate and monitor refrigeration plant for ice-making, ensure appropriate ice-making, ensure appropriate ice quality; maintain/replace kickboards, glass and rails on extremities; operate ice resurfacer machine; assist with annual ice removal and replacement including installation and painting of ice surfaces and ice depth checks.
- Work as a team to coordinate and engage in the work activities, including providing guidance to staff and assisting with orientation and training of new staff; advise NSSRC Operations Manager on work status and items of concern.
- Coordinate and/or expedite set-up and amenities requirements for facility bookings functions including liaison with facility renters/users as required; and clean up after same.
- Perform inspections on compressor/refrigeration plant, HVAC systems, general building lighting and emergency systems, ice resurfacer, fire extinguishers and/or other equipment/facilities and reports regularly on condition of same; and perform necessary maintenance such as changing filters and belts; and maintain associated records.
- Perform janitorial/maintenance duties at assigned facilities including but not limited to cleaning arena stands, floors, walls, showers, change rooms, washrooms, fixtures, and/or other building amenities; walkway sweeping/snow removal, and replenishing consumable supplies as required.
- Ensure the facility is open and closed at the scheduled times, including outdoor facilities where seasonally operated.
- Responsible for the security of the building; ensures that all policies and procedures are being followed by patrons.
- Respond to enquiries from the public and staff; investigate problems/complaints, as directed, and resolves/refers same, as appropriate when Manager is not available.

Qualifications and Requirements
- Secondary School diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid class G driver’s license in good standing required.
- One (1) to three (3) years of experience with recreational building maintenance and operations.
- Demonstrated experience or related in recreational buildings and refrigeration plant operations and maintenance preferably in a municipal environment.
- Thorough working knowledge of the operation of refrigeration and HVAC, ice-making and re-surfacing methods, water quality testing and balancing techniques, general trades fundamentals, janitorial/cleaning work methods and supplies, and sound safety practice.
- Good organizational, interpersonal, record-keeping, problem-solving and work co-ordination skills.
- Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the general public, facility users, staff, suppliers, and contract services.
- Knowledgeable of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Town policies and procedures, and related regulations i.e. First Aid/CPR, WHIMIS, Defibrillator, etc.
- Successful completion of all the following Certified Ice Technician (ORFA) Courses:
- Basic Refrigeration
- Ice Maintenance & Equipment Operations
- Ice Making & Painting Technologies
- Must be physically capable of performing required duties as described above.
- Ability to work varying shifts, as scheduled, including evenings and weekends.
Effort/Physical Demands
- Physical demand requires potentially long periods of standing, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, or lifting.
- Frequent lifting, push/pull and/or moving up to 35 pounds.
- Frequent walking, standing, and periods of driving.
- Visual attention for health and safety compliance and personal safety while on the job.
Working Conditions
- Normal work environment is the NSSRC in hot and cold temperatures.
- Shift work is required (7 day per week operation).
- Working outdoors in all weather conditions may be required.
- May be required to work on an on-call basis.
