About the role
Overview:
Reporting to the Manager, Accounting Services, the Payroll Coordinator supervises and supports the payroll team to ensure timely payment of remuneration to employees. Responsibilities include overseeing the preparation of employee pay, ensuring accurate payroll changes and records are maintained, ensuring that external parties receive required remittances and ensuring successful implementation of policies and procedures to support corporate initiatives.
The Payroll Coordinator is also responsible for the testing and implementation of system modifications, oversight of year-end calculations and overall compliance with legislative requirements and applicable agreements.
Responsibilities:
- Review and approve all reconciliations for payroll deductions and remittances.
- Review payroll reports of employee earning and deductions and ensure that payroll balances and that various deductions are paid and remitted to external agencies.
- Monitor and ensure payroll is in compliance with legislative requirements and all applicable agreements.
- Validate payroll changes that affect an employee’s gross to net calculation.
- Create general ledger and accounts payable transactions. Approve general ledger reconciliations.
- Review and approve calculations for employees’ final pay.
- Review and approve all employee retirement estimates and meet with employees to discuss calculations.
- Respond to escalated inquiries from internal and external parties. Coordinate with internal departments regarding the impact of changes to payroll.
- Conduct performance evaluations for direct reports, using regular feedback and coaching techniques as means for employee development and performance improvement.
- Participate in recruitment, support training and development opportunities, and provide coaching and guidance to staff.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Completion of Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) certification.
- Diploma in Business Administration or related field is an asset.
Experience:
- Seven years progressive payroll experience, of which three years is in a supervisory or lead capacity.
- Payroll experience in a unionized environment is an asset.
Technical Knowledge and Skills:

Strong working knowledge of application of payroll legislation, regulation, and related acts, as well as regulated payroll deductions (income tax, CPP, EI).

Proficient in use of in-house payroll applications and software.

Proficient in applicable office software (Excel, Word, Access, Outlook).

Interpret and apply pension and benefit regulations and payments.

Strong leadership skills.
