Summary:
The Abbotsford Canucks AHL Club is seeking a dedicated and progressive Strength and Conditioning Coach to lead all off-ice physical development and performance programming for our American Hockey League team. This position is a key part of our integrated High Performance Department, aligned with the Vancouver Canucks' organizational standards and player development pathway.
We are looking for a collaborative coach who brings strong technical expertise, a team-first mindset, and a passion for athlete development. The successful candidate will play a vital role throughout the competitive season and during the off-season months in Vancouver, contributing to long-term player development and tracking.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(other duties may be assigned as required)
Strength and Conditioning
- Design and implement comprehensive strength and conditioning programs tailored to individual athlete needs and positional demands.
- Manage daily physical preparation, including warm-ups, lifts, speed/conditioning sessions, and recovery protocols.
- Oversee in-season and off-season performance assessments.
- Collaborate with coaching, sports medicine, and performance staff on integrated periodization, return-to-play protocols, and individualized reconditioning.
Sport Science
- Utilize available technology to monitor workload, travel, and performance metrics.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date performance data to support longitudinal tracking, player profiling, and decision-making.
- Stay based in Vancouver during the off-season months to:
- Train players remaining in market.
- Support structured off-season programs for both NHL and AHL players.
- Assist in tracking and evaluating organizational prospects (drafted players, AHL-contracted athletes, and development camp attendees).
Nutrition
- Basic understanding and guidance capabilities surrounding performance nutrition and performance supplementation strategies
Qualifications:
- 3–5 years of experience working in high-level hockey environments (AHL, NHL, NCAA D1, CHL, or equivalent).
- Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, exercise science, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or equivalent certification in good standing. Valid other strength and conditioning, sports science or nutrition certifications are considered an additional asset
- Experience and proficiency with athlete monitoring platforms including but not limited to: VALD systems, Catapult, Output, Teambuildr, and Smartabase
- Demonstrated ability to develop athletes across a range of physical and developmental levels.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to thrive in a collaborative high-performance team setting.
- Open-minded, curious, and committed to continual learning and innovation.
