Job Summary
Free Play for Kids is searching for highly motivated and enthusiastic Assistant Coaches to join our Free to Play program on a part-time basis starting at the end of August 2025 for the 2025–2026 elementary school year.
If you’ve coached or played sports like soccer, hockey, basketball, or flag football—and love working with kids—we want to hear from you!
As an Assistant Coach, you’ll support our Free to Play after-school program by helping lead fun, engaging, and safe sessions for children aged 8–12. We go beyond traditional coaching by emphasizing holistic development, including physical literacy, social-emotional learning, and nutritional education. This role is perfect for energetic, sport-loving leaders ready to mentor and inspire.
Education & Qualifications
- Working towards or completed a degree or diploma in Physical Education, Sport and Recreation, Kinesiology, Education, Sociology, Psychology, Early Childhood Education, or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- Experience coaching /leading youth sports teams and/or extensive playing experience.
- Standard First Aid Certification and CPR training, or the ability to obtain quickly.
- Clear up-to-date Criminal and Vulnerable Sector check.
- Valid driver’s license with a reliable vehicle.
- Valid certifications in coaching would be considered a major asset.
Responsibilities
Programming Tasks
- Working with youth between the ages of 8-12 in the Free to Play program by facilitating programming in collaboration with a Head Coach and other Assistant Coaches.
- Leading practices, games, and activities with the ultimate goal of keeping kids focused in sessions, having fun, and being safe.
- Participating in work assignments arising from special events, special projects, or overall program initiatives.
- Maintaining consistent communication with team members, parents, and stakeholders.
- Modeling key organizational values through interactions with all internal and external partners and team members.
- Adhering to the company’s uniform policy by wearing the provided name tag and vest at all times while on duty.
- Representing the community that Free Play serves.
- Understanding the power of sport as a tool for social good.
Training & Development Tasks
- Participating in weekly curriculum meetings with management and other coaches.
- Completing additional training and certifications as required through the Free Play training program.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong sports knowledge and ability to learn and teach new movement skills
- A fun, outgoing, strong servant leader
- Ability to thrive in collaborative environments
- Service-oriented
- Adaptability and problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills

Position Conditions
- This is a part-time paid role (approx. 5–15 hours/week).
- Program hours are typically:
- Monday - Wednesday and Friday from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
- Thursdays from 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm.
- The job is performed in schools and recreation settings, but work settings may vary depending on projects.
