The Opportunity:
Although this is a hybrid position based out of our Canadian HQ in Calgary, there is flexibility.
Under the direction of the Manager, Database Services, we are seeking an individual who is motivated, and results oriented for the position of Senior Database Administrator (Cloud and OnPrem). The Senior DBA is passionate about learning, understanding, and working with database technologies. The position may provide training, direction, and technical guidance to staff, and/or team leadership, and provide solutions to data problems.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Implement and maintain compliance of On-prem SQL/Azure database environments with internal database security standards.
- Develop plans for providing reliable, recoverable, and scalable database/computing environments to store and integrate company data.
- Plan and deploy upgrades or modifications to improve the performance and availability of SQL servers and production databases.
- Build and maintain overall systems architecture concerning databases, back-end servers and computing environments.
- Install, supervise, maintain, and conduct performance tuning for SQL Servers and databases while ensuring high levels of data availability in Production environments.
- Maintain all aspects of database policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of databases and their accompanying software.
- Provide continuous improvement efforts to improve performance and provide increased functionality of SQL Servers and database environments.
- Develop and improve tools and procedures used for automated checks and supervise the status of database systems, ensuring their integrity and availability.
- Supervise and optimize the performance of database queries including preparation of periodical metrics, monitoring servers, deadlocks etx using SQL Sentry and other monitoring tools.
- Key Qualifications:
- Computer Science or related degree
- 6+ years of related experience in a Database Administrator role for a large corporation.
- 6+ years of experience in supporting SQL databases/ integrating and maintaining other servers including Reporting/SSRS/PowerBI/Data gateways etc
- Solid grasp of Database security and implementation of standard methodologies in database access across the enterprise, including Azure specific authentication and access methods
- High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for MS SQL Server (log shipping, DB mirroring, replication, and Always-On)
- DR strategies design, implementation, and testing
- Database monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance tuning
- DevOps automation for databases. Implementing operational automation using scripts (PowerShell, T-SQL, VB Scripts, etc.)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in both technical and non-technical scenarios.
- Strong Business Acumen: a large part of the role will be working directly with business streams to meet the organization’s strategic goals.
- A positive and people-oriented personality that is action-oriented.
- An analytical, creative, and innovative approach to solving problems.

- Experience with Azure Cloud services and ON-prem services including ADF/ETL/SSIS/SQL jobs/SQL Profiler etc.
- Experience working with Windows Server 2016 and higher
- Microsoft SQL Server 2019 (or earlier) certification
- Experience with Active Directory in the context of database security
- In-depth performance tuning and troubleshooting of SQL queries, stored procedures, and SSIS packages
- Indexing for performance (index maintenance and statistics, index usage analysis, etc.)
- On-premises, Cloud, and Hybrid database environments design, development, and support.
- Experience with PowerBI development and support, including on-premises SSRS and Cloud, based PowerBI dashboards
- Database design, data modeling, and scripting, proficiency in running/monitoring/scheduling SQL jobs/ Windows scheduler and other SSIS automation.
- Hands-on experience with ON-prem, Hybrid and Retail Environments
- Source Code repository experience (TFS, GitHub, Azure DevOps) to support software development process
