About the role
We're Hiring: Café Operations Manager
Phil & Sebastian is growing, and we’re looking for an Café Operations Manager (COM) to help us lead our café teams with intention, clarity, heart and hands-on hustle.
This isn’t a clipboard-and-laptop kind of job. This is a roll-up-your-sleeves, talk-to-everyone, non-stop-problem-solving kind of job. You’ll be in the cafes, making sure our people feel heard, our coffee shines, and our teams are set up to thrive—financially, operationally, and culturally.
We believe our cafés are not just places that serve amazing coffee—they are living expressions of our craft and our community. This role is for someone who can uphold that standard and help push it forward.
You’ll thrive in this role if you:
- Genuinely care about people. Café leaders, baristas, guests—you build trust, listen deeply, and help others succeed
- Can balance the big picture with boots-on-the-ground. You can manage metrics, budgets, and performance—but you also know when someone just needs a shift covered.
- Get joy from solving problems. Whether it’s scheduling headaches, morale dips, or missing donuts, you lean in with empathy and action.
- Believe that quality lives in the details. From clean counters to staff onboarding, you hold the bar high and help others reach it.
- Live and breathe coffee culture. You’re not just operations-focused—you understand that coffee is our craft and our passion. You love learning, teaching, and nerding out on the bar.
Your week, in broad strokes:
- Lead and support Café Leaders with hiring, onboarding, training, and scheduling
- Review and act on café reports, audits, and feedback
- Ensure each café meets sales, staffing, and quality benchmarks
- Keep the Café Issue List alive and shrinking
- Monitor and improve customer reviews, staff morale, and turnover
- Support product launches, morale initiatives, and operational improvements
- Jump into floor coverage or café support as needed
- Communicate clearly, consistently, and kindly—with baristas, leaders, trainers and with the Director
- Engage with café teams in daily coffee tasting and calibration to ensure quality stays high and consistent. Actively nurture a culture of curiosity, precision, and pride around coffee—so every cup served reflects our values and quality aspirations.
What success looks like:
- Leaders and baristas feel supported, heard, and inspired
- Cafés hit their targets: sales, budgets, quality, staffing, and guest experience
- Morale is up, turnover is down, and cafe or coffee? culture is thriving
- Issues don’t linger—they get resolved
- Guests rave about their experience (and leave glowing reviews)
This is a full-time leadership role, and we’re looking for someone who:
- Has minimum 2 years experience in a management role in a fast-paced, multi-location hospitality setting
- Ideally, has a post secondary degree
- Is financially savvy and operationally sharp
- Leads with empathy, communicates with care, and doesn’t shy away from tough conversations
- Can work a flexible schedule (including weekends) and has access to a reliable vehicle for cafe visits
- Aligns deeply with our values: quality, community, and relentless improvement
- Is inspired by Phil & Sebastian’s approach to coffee and the relentless pursuit of quality at every step from farm to cup.
If you’re ready to help us elevate what a café can be—from team culture to customer experience—we’d love to meet you. Apply now. Let’s build something better, together.
A cover letter is required to be considered for this role. Please use your cover letter to respond to the following:
- What is the deciding factor that led you to apply for this role?
- What makes you the right fit for the position?
- What impact would you like to have across our café teams and culture?
This is your opportunity to reflect on your journey within Phil & Sebastian and show how your experience has prepared you for this next step.
About Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters
We're a couple of guys who fell in love with coffee and decided to leave our cushy engineering jobs to open a cafe and roasterie in our hometown, Calgary, Canada. We now strive to push the bar of coffee higher every day.
Our dream of opening a café began in 2004. At that time, we were working as engineers and became home espresso aficionados. Through a combination of online searches, selective reading and a great deal of travel, we discovered that there was a special coffee world that did not exist in Calgary. It was only known to those few lucky ones who made the trip to these unique places.
We spent 2005 and 2006 traveling, visiting cafes and roasteries, meeting owners and picking their brains. Finally, in December of 2006, we were able to secure a spot at the Calgary Farmers' Market, and we opened our doors on March 30, 2007.
In 2009, we opened our roasterie. We currently travel each year to visit the producers in all 12 nations where we source our coffee. 100% of our coffee is directly purchased from quality focused farmers. We import the coffee in-season, and work with producers at origin to improve quality and consistency while focusing on environmental and social improvement in those communities.
Along with our talented team, we currently operate a full-time roasterie, five award-winning cafés and work with excellent wholesale partners across Canada and the United States.
