Shearwater Resort, owned and operated by the Heiltsuk Nation, is a premier eco-tourism destination in the heart of British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest. Among its services, the resort offers customized charter boat services to cater to marine travelers, tourists, and local residents. The Charter Driver is a key role, responsible for providing exceptional service and safe, reliable transportation for Shearwater’s guests and clients.

Position Overview

The Charter Driver is responsible for operating vessels for private and group charters, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all passengers. This role involves navigating a variety of routes, coordinating with clients, and maintaining vessel safety and compliance. Reporting to the Water Taxi/Sea bus Manager, the Charter Driver is a customer-facing role that supports Shearwater’s commitment to delivering exceptional service and showcasing the natural beauty of the Great Bear Rainforest.

Key Responsibilities

Charter Operations

  • Operate vessels for private and group charters, including sightseeing tours, fishing expeditions, and custom transportation services.
  • Plan and execute routes safely and efficiently, considering weather, tides, and marine conditions.
  • Assist clients in organizing and customizing their charters to meet their needs and expectations.

Customer Service

  • Provide a welcoming and professional experience for passengers, offering information about local attractions, wildlife, and eco-tourism opportunities.
  • Assist passengers with boarding, disembarking, and handling of personal belongings or equipment.
  • Address customer inquiries, concerns, and feedback promptly and professionally to ensure a positive experience.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure passenger and crew safety by adhering to all Transport Canada regulations and Shearwater Resort safety protocols.
  • Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections of vessels, ensuring all equipment is functioning correctly and meets safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate logs of trips, passenger counts, and any incidents, as required by regulatory bodies.

Maintenance and Cleanliness

  • Keep the vessel clean, organized, and fully stocked with necessary supplies before and after each trip.
  • Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of the vessel and equipment, reporting issues to the Water Taxi/Sea bus Manager.
  • Ensure proper fueling and waste management procedures are followed.

Collaboration and Teamwork

  • Work closely with the Water Taxi/Sea bus Manager and other team members to coordinate schedules, optimize operations, and enhance client satisfaction.
  • Provide feedback on operational improvements and customer preferences to support service development.
  • Assist with other marine operations as needed, including water taxi or sea bus services during peak periods.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A valid Transport Canada Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) or higher certification is required.
  • Marine Emergency Duties (MED) certification is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating small commercial or passenger vessels, preferably in charter services.
  • First Aid and CPR certification are required.
  • Skills and Competencies
  • Strong navigation and vessel handling skills, with the ability to operate safely in varying marine conditions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to deliver exceptional customer service.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and Transport Canada regulations.
  • Physical ability to assist passengers, load cargo, and handle vessel equipment.
  • Familiarity with the local marine environment, wildlife, and Indigenous culture is a significant asset.
