At ATB, we exist to make it possible for our clients, team members and communities. Our purpose is more than aspirational. It's a real commitment we live every day through our values (what we call the ATB ID).
Life at ATB is about more than work. In fact, we’re consistently recognized as one of Canada's top employers thanks to our high-care, high-performance culture, upheld by the three commitments we make to our team members:
Impact in action: No matter where you are in the organization, you're empowered to make an impact in the lives of our clients and communities.
Thrive together: We want you—the unique, authentic you—to feel safe and celebrated at work. We're on a continuous journey to build the most flexible and inclusive programs.
Ready for tomorrow: We want to enable your success through interesting and challenging work, performance enablement, and learning and development.
About the role
As ATB's next Associate Investment Counselor (AIC), you will support Investment Counselors (IC) to provide discretionary investment counseling and portfolio management for High Net Worth (HNW) and Ultra High Net Worth investors. The AIC works within the IC’s business practice to learn, understand, initiate and maintain strong, long term relationships with our clients in order to help the ICs to initiate and maintain strong, longterm relationships with these clients based on a track record of exceptional service, strong communication, sound investment management and a commitment to fiduciary duty. The AIC will need to learn about the ATB Investment Philosophy and how we manage our client’s investment. Once you have a good understanding of our system, practice and our philosophy, you will start helping to prepare investment proposals, assist in monitoring and managing our client portfolios with the supervision of our ICs or the Managing Director of Private Investment Counsel and Institutional Portfolio Management (MD). The AIC will also start building their connection with our internal partners, ATB Securities Inc. Financial Advisors, ATB Private Bankers, ATB Business Bankers and ATB Capital Markets, and also external partners, such as lawyers and accountants to generate new business opportunities.
Accountabilities
- Supports IC’s in providing discretionary investment counseling and portfolio management services to meet clients’ goals
- Participate in discovery discussions with prospects to design and implement an Investment Policy Statement (IPS) tailored to specific goals and expectations
- Recommends portfolio changes as needed by applying professional judgment to key inputs such as risk, return, investment time horizon, tax considerations, liquidity and other relevant constraints with the supervision from ICs or MD
- Exemplifies ATB Investment Management Inc. behavioral beliefs related to discipline, ignoring noise, avoiding market timing and investing rather than speculating
- Communicates ATB Investment Management Inc. investment philosophy and portfolio construction beliefs related to risk management, strategic asset allocation, global diversification and investment cost control
- Oversees the completion of client service tasks including maintaining relationships with internal partners and support groups
- Proactively identifies client needs for specialized financial, tax, estate and succession planning expertise and collaborates with internal and external resources to ensure the clients’ interests are prioritized
- Promotes and shares knowledge of investment counseling and portfolio management throughout ATB and relevant communities to maintain and strengthen the ATB Investment Management private investment counsel reputation and brand
- Demonstrates emotional intelligence in asking the right questions and providing an informed perspective that goes beyond the public markets to connect net worth to life goals and necessary trade-offs
- Collaborates with ATB Investment Management portfolio management and research teams to keep abreast of capital market assumptions and communicate evolving client needs
- Directly or indirectly develops and manages client relationships and getting referrals from existing clients, ATB Partners, lawyers and accountants
- Achieves individual growth objectives and contributes to ATB Investment Management business goals.
- Provides input to the goal-setting process for client advocacy metrics, new business development and asset consolidation
- Delivers an elevated service experience for clients and collaborates well with internal and external partners to promote customer retention and advocacy
Skills, experience & requirements
- Broad and strong knowledge of behavioral finance and investment markets with exposure to asset allocation
- Service-oriented communication skills and adaptable presentation skills commensurate with the expectations of HNW and UHNW investors in urban and rural communities
- Work well in a team environment as well as ability to work independently in a fastpaced and high-performance team
- Ability to deliver exceptional service to our valuable clients
- Five or more years of investment industry experience, with specific experience in business development and private client investment portfolio management
- University Degree or equivalent related experience
- CFA Level III
- CFP holder / candidate is considered an asset

If you believe your skills and experience align with the role—but you might not check all the boxes—we want to hear from you. We encourage candidates from all work backgrounds, equity-seeking communities and experience levels to apply. If you’re seeking a career where your drive, perspective and growth are celebrated, we want to hear from you.
We’re dedicated to building a workforce reflective of those within our communities, and a culture where our team members are equipped with what they need to succeed—their way. Part of creating an inclusive workplace is recognizing our role in advancing Truth and Reconciliation.
