Job Details

Description Wildfire crew members are expected to participate and excel by suppressing fires using methods such as digging hand guard, using water delivery systems, operating power saws and various other practices. Working as a part of an organized crew within a definite command structure, wildfire employees work long hours in stressful or potentially dangerous situations and are expected to be able to work for extended periods with little time off. While not on fire related assignments crews will work on base, cleaning and maintaining gear and facilities as well as be utilized for project work such as silviculture work, trail building, tree planting, brushing as well as participate in scheduled physical training and testing, training and community based work. As a responding unit, firefighters are expected to be available for assignment while on standby and shall be expected to respond within an assigned timeframe.

Firefighters need to be in excellent physical condition and exhibit a high energy work ethic. They need to be able to take direction, work co-operatively within diverse teams, work groups and across the organization to achieve group and organizational goals. They must be able to work long days under extreme conditions, be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibility, assignments and organizational structures. Dedication to workplace and fireline safety is critical.

Responsibilities: Safety:

  • Maintain and encourage a high degree of personal safety and safety for the crew.
  • Participate in SNRC’s OH&S Program and abide by its policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate ability to plan and take appropriate action on fires leading by example and ensuring effective teamwork in adherence to safety standards.
  • Establish effective communication methods (radio etc.) with crew, transportation providers and others in the area.
  • Safely operate and maintain firefighting equipment such as powersaws, pumps, etc…
  • Perform strenuous and physically demanding work (ie: carry heavy loads of equipment for long distances) in remote areas and adverse conditions such as; smoke, extreme heat, mountainous terrain for extended periods of time.
  • Travel safely by truck, boat, ATV, float plane and helicopter without issue.
  • Maintain personal health and fitness in order to conduct firefighting duties regularly and efficiently.

Quality & Professionalism:

  • Maintain professional deportment and demeanor at all times.
  • Attend, and successfully complete, any additional fire suppression training (as required by management).
  • Work extended hours (and overtime) with limited notice; be available for standby and on-call work; travel extensively.
  • Take direction and follow instructions accurately in a structured and disciplined environment.
  • Participate in camp shifts as required and live in camp style environments. (up to 16 consecutive days)
  • Ensure your daily equipment and supplies are organized.
  • Perform non-fire related tasks such as fire camp/base regular upkeep or other duties as assigned by Crew Leader, supervisor or management,
  • Present oneself in a manner appropriate for daily assignments

  • Ensure all activities are conducive to SNRC interests (ie: efficient, billable, prepared, and responsible for maintaining personal and company equipment).
