Edmonton's Animal Control Peace Officers facilitate responsible pet ownership through community engagement, ensuring pets positively contribute to the overall well-being of the city.

Utilizing their law enforcement expertise, these officers establish community relationships, navigate difficult situations, and champion animal welfare. Their dedication to public safety, animal well-being, and community education makes this a fulfilling career path.

What will you do?

  • Respond to officer-initiated and publicly reported incidents using sound judgment and decision-making
  • Conduct detailed investigations of alleged Municipal bylaw and Provincial Regulation violations
  • Apply law enforcement practices appropriately and respectfully under minimal supervision
  • Prepare reports and correspondence as required
  • Work in partnership with internal and external partner agencies
  • Work in physically demanding and sometimes dangerous environments
  • Handling and care of a broad range of domestic animals and wildlife
  • Proactively patrol City parks and public spaces to ensure responsible pet ownership
  • Participate in community engagement events and activities
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a recognized Diploma related to Police Studies, Security, Criminology or a related field with a minimum 3 years of strong customer service experience and a minimum 1 year of diverse law enforcement including security, bylaw enforcement, provincial law enforcement or a related area experience is required; OR
  • Completion of Grade 12 and a minimum of 5 years of enforcement experience in a recognized law enforcement environment; or
  • Must have been a serving Police Officer in Canada within the last 5 years, or employed as a Peace Officer level I within Alberta for at least 2 years

Assets:

  • Strategic de-escalation training
  • Experience working or volunteering in your community or with racialized people and other equity seeking groups
  • Knowledge of another language
  • Knowledge of or training in harm reduction, anti-racism, Indigenous awareness and GBA+
  • Experience in professional animal handling

Skills required for success:

  • Professional knowledge of the Community Peace Officer Program, provincial requirements and standards
  • Knowledge of City of Edmonton policies, procedures, and law
  • Knowledge of operational and tactical planning
  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse communities
  • Demonstrated understanding of racism and discrimination as it pertains to law enforcement, and how bias can influence behaviour and decisions
  • Knowledge and practical application of conflict resolution skills; analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrate service excellence, embracing diversity and promoting inclusiveness
  • Knowledge and practical application of dealing with difficult persons; strong analytical, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must possess strong presentation and public speaking skills
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent team player with the ability to contribute to a high performing team
  • A proven ability to work well within a unionized workforce

Conditions of Employment:

  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Must possess or be able to obtain the Provincial Community Peace Officer I designation with completion of the Community Peace Officer Induction Program - CPOIP, as well as the Municipal Bylaw Officer appointment
  • Must be able to obtain or have successfully completed the Physical Abilities Readiness Evaluation (P.A.R.E.) prior to employment
  • Intermediate First Aid CPR-C and AED certifications prior to employment
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Ability to work in physically demanding and sometimes dangerous environments
  • Must be able to work independently on confidential and complex issues
  • Ability to work outdoors under various weather and environmental conditions
  • Evening and weekend availability is required
  • On-call services outside of business hours is required
