Basic Function
This is an exciting new position and will play a critical role in driving financial excellence across TRIUMF. This role is responsible for supporting financial planning and analysis for TRIUMF, including short/mid/long-term planning, budgeting, forecasting, business case development, financial modelling and decision support for processes and initiatives. This role will work closely with other project managers, division heads and leadership management team, to ensure the organisation has the relevant and timely financial information it requires to make confident decisions, helping to improve outcomes and to have a positive impact, support the development of the annual budget and multiyear plan process, support monthly and quarterly financial reporting process, and analyzing key business issues impacting the cost savings opportunities within a business unit. This role will require flexibility to support the ever changing and evolving needs of the organisation.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Provides a full range of FP&A services, including
- Takes a leading role in financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting, and prepares analysis of budgets, key performance indicators, business plans and ongoing financial results to enable strategic recommendations on corrective actions.
- Creates variance analysis reports and financial models and supports real-time financial performance monitoring.
- Escalates critical financial issues to the Head of FP&A and CFO, when applicable.
- Sets and tracks key performance indicators (KPIs) and objectives, and is comfortable completing market research and comparable sector analysis.
- Recommends strategies for increasing financial performance.
- Prepares monthly, quarterly, and year-end variances analysis, forecasting and reporting; presents and reviews results with division heads; works to identify significant risks and recommends mitigation strategies and raises to appropriate stakeholders.
- Is integral in automating functions of the financial planning and analysis software (Workday Adaptive) and becomes a system super user.
- Liaises with internal and external audit groups, including providing information and explanatory discussions with auditors
- Provides financial advice, training, and support to TRIUMF users in the areas of accounting, budgeting, financial matters, forecasting and implications of various accounting policies and sound business practices
- Understands, develops, and promotes consistent application of TRIUMF’s finance policies and procedures.
- Drafts policy and documentation of procedures and makes recommendations to continuously improve FP&A processes and procedures.
- Supports provision of financial information to collaborative grant and project meetings
- Ensures the board and leadership team have clear understanding of the key financial elements through preparing clear and timely presentations, including tables, charts, trends and variance analysis with supporting commentary.
- Works closely with the accounting and HR teams on ensuring financials are treated and presented in the correct way and that headcount forecasts and reports are accurate and sourced from HR.
- Applies common business principles to critically evaluate and accurately perform analysis.
- Uses insights to influence the views of managers and provides guidance and support, supported by facts, to influence and lead business decisions.
- Utilises best practices to evaluate and deconstruct complex organisational and financial situations. Compiles and links analytical information, experience and insights using quantitative and qualitative reasoning skills.
- Demonstrates understanding and application of common quantitative techniques by preparing appropriate financial analysis with fact-based assumptions to enable decision making
- Identifies and secures additional income, grants and commercialisation opportunities, working with TRIUMF Innovations Inc. to model costs and income to ensure commercial agreements are robust
- Utilises knowledge of the organization's information systems & appropriate financial tools to find, extract, and analyze data and to produce reports
- Applies modelling, forecasting and planning techniques to develop forecasts with cost drivers that are identified, validated and explained
- Supports TRIUMF leadership and management in developing and analyzing business cases, determining the financial implications for all major decisions, ensuring value for money, return on investment, productivity and service delivery analysis, quantifying impacts on budgets and forecasts
- Provides support for end users on managing their financials, including actuals reporting, assisting in budgeting and forecasting data uploads into the financial system
- Supports the development of multi-year financial and business plans and forecasts, reviews and validates financial assumptions and models, and identifies trends that impact the Division’s ability to meet budget and service delivery targets.
- Interpret and provide forecasts and analysis that link to business unit strategy and performance.
- Complies with and administers Finance controls, policies and procedures.
Supervision Given
The position is an independent contributor. Provides leadership and training to other staff in the Finance & Supply Chain team and the wider organization.
Knowledge and Skills
- Professional Accounting Designation or a combination of experience and education related to the requirements of the position
- Experience in budgeting, financial analysis, forecasting, reporting, auditing and accounting
- Financial systems experience preferably within an ERP environment - experience with financial modules of Workday and Adaptive Planning would be an asset
- Strong business case development and analysis experience
- Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles as they relate to non-profit.
- Advanced financial modelling and Excel skills
- Experience with preparing and delivering complex presentations and writing formal reports for management and good presentation skills.
- Extensive project management experience
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline is desirable
- Minimum 5 years of progressive work experience
- Experience with and ability to consolidate and interpret financial data and present findings
- Experience in the not-for-profit or public sector is desirable
- Ability to simultaneously manage a diverse range of complex projects and activities
