About the role

Why Redlen Technologies?

Redlen Technologies is a pioneering company that has revolutionized the semiconductor crystal growth and fabrication process.

At Redlen Technologies, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. Our founder's visionary work with the Canadian Space Agency laid the foundation for our groundbreaking Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) sensors, revolutionizing medical imaging, security imaging, and non-destructive testing. We are driving a quantum leap forward in medical CT scanners, elevating diagnostic accuracy while reducing radiation dose– a technological feat that has earned us global recognition. With a commitment to excellence, we have earned the trust of Fortune 500 industry customers, leading to our acquisition by Canon Inc. for $430M– a testament to our industry leadership.

With over 200 dedicated professionals, we take pride in fostering a work environment where Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) professionals thrive. As an equal opportunity employer we demonstrate that diversity drives innovation, and we are passionate about building a future where every employee contributes to our mission-driven success. Redlen's teams, mirroring the multifaceted diversity of Canadian society, exemplify our commitment to leveraging a wide range of ideas and backgrounds as a driving force for innovation, business excellence, and pioneering advancements in STEM.

Our R&D team supports the development and delivery of our world-leading photon-counting radiation detector technology to major system OEMs for photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT). We are expanding the team and hiring an Instrumentation Engineer to support our device physics and reliability teams. Reporting to the Senior Detector Scientist & Detector Physics Team Lead, the successful applicant will assume a key and hands-on role in designing, building, debugging and documenting custom and semi-custom instrumentation to characterize the performance of our materials and devices. The Instrumentation Engineer will work as part of a larger team, frequently interacting with Detector Scientists and Engineers.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop low-noise small-signal instrumentation electronics for laboratory experiments including photon counting, current measurement, including various sensors e.g., temperature, force, etc. This may involve the design of prototype printed circuit boards.
  • Populate printed circuit boards including soldering of both surfaced-mount and through-hole electronic components.
  • Debug electronic circuitry using diagnostic tools such as meters, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzers.
  • Work with high-voltage power supplies and ESD-sensitive circuitry using appropriate safe work practices.
  • Develop and debug acquisition and analysis software using Python and MATLAB to control instrumentation, mechanical systems and acquire data
  • Use source code version control systems, preferably git, to manage software.
  • As required, develop embedded firmware or FPGA code to communicate with photon counting ASICs or other experimental components.
  • Develop, assemble and debug mechanical systems using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components for motion control, precision alignment of components including the detectors being tested.
  • Where necessary, design custom mechanical components for prototyping using 3D printing, machining, etc.
  • Run the first experiments with new instruments including collaboration with the Detector Scientists to interpret and analyze the data.
  • Perform gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R) measurements to quantify measurement variability.
  • Perform measurements until the instruments are fully debugged and validated, then train technicians/technologists in their operation.
  • Ability and willingness to perform additional tasks and duties as applicable to the role assigned

Skills Required:

  • Excellent oral and written English language communication skills
  • Background in electronic circuit design, debugging and test
  • Good manual dexterity to work with delicate and miniature components.
  • Software development skills for data acquisition and instrument control.
  • Experience with mechanical system construction and debugging
  • Experience with programming with Python, MATLAB or similar software

Other Requirements:

  • A hands-on orientation, experience as a maker on your own projects is an asset
  • Attention to detail is essential
  • Demonstrated positive attitude and self-motivation
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Comfortable with challenging development projects with competing priorities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding interpersonal and collaborative team skills
  • Experience in a research and development environment is an asset

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Physics.

Salary Range: $74,000 - $93,000 CAD

At Redlen, we prioritize clarity in our hiring process. The salary range posted above reflects the minimum and maximum for new hire salaries, taking into account factors such as job-related skills and expertise, relevant training and education, and business needs. It is common for ranges to span multiple levels in order to attract top talent across experience levels. It is uncommon to be hired at the top of the range; however, in exceptional cases where a candidate's skills and expertise significantly exceed the role's requirements, we may consider offering a higher salary. If you believe your skill set falls outside this range and you’re interested in exploring opportunities with Redlen, please reach out to our People & Culture Team (T.A. Specialists or Business Partners), specifying how your expertise aligns with our teams, so we can collaborate on potential opportunities. We believe in developing those that demonstrate quality performance and promise.
