Reporting to the Director, Labour & Employee Relations, this position is accountable for the execution of positive labour and employee relations along with driving People and Culture (P&C) operational improvements and change.
The Labour Relations and Operations Manager is a subject matter expert that has extensive experience in both union and non-union environments. This role will provide strategic advice on collective agreement interpretation and other labour relations to the P&C Business Partners and leaders, ensuring consistency in the advice provided and adherence to collective agreements and all relevant legislation. Further, this role will manage Labour Relations (LR) processes, grievances, workplace investigation, employee relations and support the Director with P&C operational processes.
How You Will Make An Impact Labour and Employee Relations
- In conjunction with the Director, Labour and Employee Relations, lead and manage the grievance process, including intake, investigation, response, documentation, and resolution of grievances at all stages, and represent the organization as required.
- Collaborate with Director, Labour and Employee Relations on workplace investigations and manage through all stages.
- Provide expert guidance and daily support to Business Partners, P&C Team and leaders on complex labour and employee relations matters and engage with external legal counsel as required.
- Interpret collective agreements, corporate policies, employment legislation, arbitral jurisprudence, and case law.
- Support Director, Labour and Employee Relations in collective bargaining negotiations.
- Champion a positive employee and labour relations environment that supports fairness, equity, and engagement.
Process, Data & Resource Management
- In conjunction with the Director, Labour and Employee Relations, drive continuous improvement by identifying areas for improvement, developing and implementing streamlined P&C processes.
- Develop, maintain and improve P&C documentation and templates
- Compile and analyze data related to labour and employee relations issues, advise on trends across the organization, make and implement recommendations
- Create and distribute practical toolkits on recurring employment and labour issues to support consistency.
- Foster employee engagement by ensuring P&C team members are well-supported, equipped with the right tools, and developed for both current and future roles.
What You Will Bring To TVO
- You are a passionate and proactive individual with a University Degree/Designation in Human Resources (HR)/Labour Relations, with a minimum of 7 years of progressive end-to-end Employee life cycle HR experience, including 1-2 years in a leadership capacity.
- 5-7 years of experience in HR/P&C operations which includes design and implementing HR processes, building SOPs, and rolling out organization wide
- Deep expertise in labour relations, including collective agreement interpretation, investigations, and grievance handling and coaching Business Partners.
- Knowledge of strategic and tactical problem-solving approaches and an ability to convert strategic objectives into tangible action plans and results.
- Embrace change, drive innovation, and apply critical thinking to identify root issues and develop effective solutions, ensuring sustainable impact and learning.
- Fluent understanding and experience applying multiple acts and statutes, including the Labour Relations Act, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Rights Code, and Pay Equity Act.
- Effectively navigates day-to-day conflicts with tact and diplomacy, makes decisions aligned with TVO’s values, and engages stakeholders in implementing and evaluating outcomes for continuous improvement.
