About the role
The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.
Position title: Financial Strategist
Reports to: Vice President, Finance
Employee status: Hourly Exempt, Appointed
Length of term: August 15, 2025 – April 30, 2026
Hours per week: 15 hours per week
Compensation: $19.00 per hour
Position Purpose
The Office of the AMS Vice President, Finance is responsible for all financial matters of the organization including all clubs and constituencies. The Financial Strategist will support the VP Finance portfolio by improving financial transparency, forecasting business outcomes and opportunities, and automating and enhancing internal processes. This position is designed to enhance the Society’s analytical and operational capabilities in alignment with the AMS Three-Year Financial Plan (2024–2027), with an emphasis on KPI monitoring, student fee impact analysis, and strategic financial decision-making.
The Financial Strategist will focus on utilizing financial data to build confidence among stakeholders and facilitate data-informed decision-making across the AMS. This position will involve several important projects and initiatives across the VP Finance portfolio.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Build and maintain financial dashboards for internal and external stakeholders, including
visualizations of fund usage and AMS department spending
- Conduct monthly variance analyses and develop auto-generated variance reports for distribution
to constituencies
- Track and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) outlined in the AMS Three-Year Financial
Plan, providing monthly summaries to the VP Finance and relevant department heads
- Collaborate with the AVP Finance and Communications teams to produce visually engaging
financial reports that are accessible to students and stakeholders
- Collaborate with the AMS Accounting team and software solutions providers to enhance and
automate the AMS’s financial systems and tools
- Research potential AMS business development opportunities and evaluate their financial viability,
alignment with student needs, and projected return on investment through relevant analyses
- Assist in tracking AMS reserve funds and researching low-risk investment options to support
long-term financial sustainability and endowment planning
- Other duties as required
Qualifications and Experience
- Must be a currently registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges
- Experience as a Treasurer/VP Finance of a club or constituency is an asset
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Interest in the Financial goals of the AMS and its business units
- Experience or strong interest in financial analysis, forecasting, or business strategy
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and data visualization tools such as R and Python preferred
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn ERP and accounting systems (e.g., Microsoft Business
Central, Continia)
- Above average in both writing and computer skills
