Calgary’s science centre is a pioneer in science entertainment and programming, with roots dating back to 1967. Home to one of Western Canada’s largest dome theatre, the Digital Immersion Gallery, VR experiences, and innovative spaces like Steven’s Lab, where interactive experiments unfold before your eyes. From the robot-dog Flint to Canada’s first robot-coa5ter, R05iE, and a 15-acre park surrounding the science of the developing brain, Spark is a hub for creative encounters.

Position Overview

The Director, Facility Operations is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for the strategic oversight and day-to-day management of all facility operations. This role ensures that physical spaces are safe, efficient, well-maintained, and support the organization’s broader mission and vision. Reporting to the Vice President, Capital Projects and Facility Operations, the Director leads a multidisciplinary team in delivering high-quality facilities services including maintenance, building systems, security, health & safety, custodial, and sustainability initiatives.

The ideal candidate brings a proven track record in facility management, a strong understanding of building systems and life-cycle planning, and the ability to lead cross-functional teams with a commitment to continuous improvement, visitor experience, and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Planning

· Develop and manage operational budgets for facility operations, aligned with organizational priorities.

· Provide strategic input to the VP, Capital Projects and Facility Operations on plans, directions, and long-term strategies.

· Ensure alignment of operations activities with the strategic goals of TELUS Spark.

· Lead continuous improvement initiatives to optimize operational performance and enhance visitor experience.

Operational Oversight

· Oversee daily facility operations including building maintenance, grounds maintenance, building systems, custodial, security, and health and safety.

· Monitor, anticipate, and respond to changing operational conditions; identify risks and develop contingency plans.

· Ensure optimal results against performance targets through regular measurement and analysis.

· Lead planning and execution of proactive, predictive, and preventative maintenance, modifications, and repairs.

· Maintain and oversee building automation, HVAC, electrical, lighting, fire protection, life safety, and security systems.

· Lead procurement of materials and supplies for maintenance and operations, ensuring value and timely delivery.

· Negotiate pricing, quality standards, and service agreements with external vendors.

· Champion sustainable operations practices including energy efficiency, waste reduction, and environmental compliance in alignment with The City of Calgary and Spark’s climate and sustainability goals.

Compliance & Risk Management

· Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and codes (e.g., OH&S Act, fire, electrical, gas, plumbing, and building codes).

· Lead internal initiatives to align operations with code changes and industry best practices.

· Act as a primary contact for emergency alarm systems and hold Incident Commander responsibilities in Spark’s Emergency Response Plan (ERP).

· Develop, implement, and maintain ERP documentation and lead training for staff and board members.

· Approve contractor work authorization permits and ensure safe, compliant operations by external service providers.

Team Leadership & Development

· Build and lead a high-performing operations team focused on excellence in maintenance, safety, security, and custodial services.

· Provide in-house training on maintenance and operational procedures.

· Support team succession planning and talent development to meet operational goals and future needs.

· Work collaboratively with other departments to support cross-functional initiatives and address operational challenges.

· Foster strong internal communication and teamwork; model high performance, flexibility, and kindness in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

· Build and maintain productive relationships with utility providers, contractors, and external partners, representing Spark in industry associations such as BOMA.

· Respond to emergencies as required, including evenings and weekends.

Qualifications & Knowledge

· 10-15 years of progressive experience in a building operations and maintenance.

· 5+ years of people leadership experience.

· Understanding and experience with the challenges associated with operating and maintaining a high-performance building with high occupant levels.

· Extensive knowledge of building management systems.

· A solid understanding of operational finance planning, accounting, controls and compliance and contracts.

· Comprehensive knowledge/adherence to codes, policy, legislation.

· Strong commitment to safety, sustainability and environmental protection.

· Proven ability to think strategically, creating competitive strategies and plans for the organization.

· Big picture thinker with an ability to factor in people and values-centred criteria in problem-solving and decision-making
