Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction’s Consumer Investigations Unit (CIU) handles consumer complaints and investigates potential violations of consumer protection laws in Alberta.

Role Responsibilities

You will report to the Manager of the Calgary Consumer Investigation Unit. Your position as a Senior Investigator is an advanced level position. You will conduct investigations of alleged breaches of Alberta’s acts related to consumer protection. You will be promoting a fair marketplace, providing information to the public, conducting investigations from public complaints and taking enforcement action.

You will have the ability to conduct investigations across a wide scope of complaints related to consumer protection with a skillset allowing the senior investigator to take on complex and multifaceted investigations. You will have knowledge and experience in advanced investigative techniques including file management.

Your experience will allow you to work independently with minimal supervision. You will also work effectively in a team. You will be able to lead other investigators and manage investigation tasks during a complex investigation. You will also have mentoring skills allowing you to assist and provide guidance to investigators with lesser experience.

To be successful in this role you must demonstrate the following:

• Excellent listening, written and verbal communications skills.

• Excellent decision-making skills including being able to make decisions related to the direction and flow of complex investigations.

• Excellent organizational and time management skills.

• Experience in conducting law enforcement investigations, criminal investigations or regulatory investigations.

• Experience in court processes, serving documents, testifying in court or administrative hearings.

• Excellent knowledge of gathering evidence and rules relating to admissibility of evidence.

• Experience in drafting and obtaining judicial authorization for Production Orders or Search Warrants.

• Excellent skills in taking witness statements and warned statements.

• Have a strong ability to gather information through database searches or open source searches.

• Possess strong conflict resolution skills.

Qualifications

Requirements:
University graduation in a related field (e.g., Criminology, Social Service, Probation Officer, Security) plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience (e.g., Peace Officer, Police Officer; or equivalent as described below).

Knowledge of or experience with the following would be considered an asset:

• Alberta’s Consumer Protection Legislation.

• Criminal Code of Canada.

• Regulatory or Criminal investigations.

• Previous experience as a police officer, with a background in conducting fraud investigations.

Equivalencies will be considered as follows:

• A High School Diploma and eight years of related experience.

• A one-year certificate and seven years of related experience.

• A two-year diploma and six years of related experience.

• A master’s degree and 2 years of related experience.

Other important information to be aware of:

• This is a temporary 2-year opportunity (with possibility of extension).

• This position is located in the Centre 70 Building (7015 Macleod Trail S. W.), Calgary.

• Hours of work: 7.25 hours per day / 36.25 hours per week (Monday – Friday).

• This position may also require a CPIC check and qualification for Level 3 security clearance.
