The Opportunity - Summer Student, Grounds

At Olds College of Agriculture and Technology, we are dedicated to fostering a supportive and rewarding work environment. Our Summer Student, Grounds position provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in horticulture, landscaping, and campus maintenance while contributing to a collaborative and innovative environment.

The Summer Student Grounds Worker will assist the Grounds department by performing a variety of horticultural, landscaping, and grounds maintenance tasks. This role includes operating equipment, supporting campus waste management, and ensuring campus safety and environmental standards are upheld.

This is a fantastic opportunity to build practical skills, contribute to the community, and gain valuable industry experience.

Key Job Functions:

  • Perform horticultural and grounds maintenance tasks, including cleaning and maintaining grounds, spring cleanup, and preparing planting beds
  • Maintain perennials and assist in planning, growing, monitoring, fertilizing, and assessing the annual bedding crop
  • Operate equipment such as trailers, trucks, skid steers, and lawn mowers
  • Support waste management by maintaining garbage disposal bins on campus
  • Ensure best practices and standards are followed in alignment with established procedures
  • Complete assigned tasks and ensure related documentation is processed accurately
  • Work collaboratively to maintain a safe and welcoming environment on campus
  • The employee is responsible for being aware of health and safety responsibilities and expectations as outlined in college policy, departmental and area procedures
  • Perform other related duties as required

Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Must possess a minimum of a Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator's License
  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment is an asset
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while accepting direction
  • Strong customer service skills and a commitment to ethical, respectful behavior
  • Willingness to adopt new technologies and practices
  • Acts ethically, openly, honestly, and respectfully to build and maintain an environment of trust, safety, and well-being

Working Conditions:

  • Physically demanding role requiring manual dexterity and the ability to work in adverse weather conditions

Conditions of Employment:

  • Current Criminal Reference check that is free of any offenses
  • Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies
  • You must provide and wear CSA approved footwear and successfully complete the provided WHMIS certification training
  • Successful candidates must be secondary or post-secondary students prior to and/or immediately following their work period
