FSC415H5S – Advanced Forensic Biology – Emergency Posting

Course Description: This advanced course explores the methodologies and data interpretation of forensic DNA typing, and other forensic biology techniques. The course will cover the principles, protocols, and current practices in an effort to understand the “what”, “how” and “why” of DNA analysis in a forensic context. Students will also learn about new and future trends in the field of forensic DNA typing, where discussion and evaluation of the primary literature is a key component of this course. Practical sessions will focus on the advanced techniques discussed in lecture.

Session: January 1, 2026 – April 30, 2026

Lectures: Wednesday 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM (In-person)

Practicals/Tutorials: Monday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM (In-person)

Size of Appointment: 70 hours (total number of assigned hours is dependent on course enrolment and course approvals)

Qualifications: Successful candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in Biology or related forensic sub discipline field (completed). Professional designation and/or professional experience is required; demonstrated excellence in course subject matter.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience working in a forensic science lab setting is highly preferred, as is WHIMS training. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the following: Experience/ background in: Laboratory Analysis of Forensic Biological Evidence and crime scene investigation; Forensic Serology & Basic Serology techniques, General experience in molecular biology methods & Forensic DNA profiling: DNA extraction methods; DNA quantitation methods; PCR; SNP genotyping (Real Time PCR and Luminex); STR genotyping using capillary sequencer, primer design.

Duties: Prep and delivery of weekly 2-hour labs and all lab demonstratives; Group in-lab supervision; Assist with marking/grading assignments; Grade entry on Quercus; Oversee, schedule and organize mock trials to ensure smooth execution of trial exercise.
