When you think of the Ministry of Finance, you probably think of numbers, budgets and accounting. Numbers do play a big role in what we do, but we aren’t looking for a numbers person. In the Communications Branch, we are looking for someone who can tell the story behind the numbers and educate the public about the province’s financial picture. As a central agency, the Ministry of Finance is a hub of information and we are looking for an experienced communicator to join our team to help shape our external and internal communications.

This position will work alongside divisions and branches within the ministry and with various stakeholders across the Government of Saskatchewan. The Senior Communications Consultant plays a key role in leading the ministry’s internal communications projects, including writing, content creation, employee onboarding and supporting culture and engagement initiatives. This position also supports the ministry’s external communications through media relations and media monitoring, issues management, fiscal reporting communications and stakeholder relations. The Senior Communications Consultant works alongside a small but mighty team and this position serves as an excellent opportunity to expand leadership capacity and build connections within the Government of Saskatchewan.

As a leader within our team, your key responsibilities include:

  • Taking a lead role in the development and implementation of strategic internal and external communications plans that support the goals and objectives of the ministry and Government of Saskatchewan;
  • Creating content and managing processes related to the publication and communication of the provincial budget, quarterly financial reports, public accounts and all communications related to the province’s fiscal position;
  • Assisting with media relations and issues management, including the development of ministry media releases, media briefing packages, media monitoring and analysis;
  • Creating content to assist the implementation of an internal communications strategy to increase employee engagement and continue the development of a positive culture within the ministry;
  • Creating multi-platform content for the ministry’s intranet and online presence;
  • Establishing, building and maintaining positive, proactive partnerships within the branch and stakeholders inside and outside of government; and
  • Analyzing trends and techniques to develop innovative approaches that can be implemented to improve communications results.

Ideal Candidate

In order to be successful in this role, you will be:

  • A consensus builder, well-organized and goal oriented;
  • A strategic thinker with superior communications skills;
  • A professional skilled at writing, with experience writing for online platforms and using SharePoint and Sitecore (or similar intranet and web content management systems);
  • A communications expert with proficiency using InDesign (or similar graphic design software) and the ability to create content such as infographics for use on web pages and social media platforms;
  • A creative person with photography and videography experience, as well as familiarity with photo and video editing programs – or a willingness to learn; and
  • An innovative communicator with the expertise to manage a variety of channels and applications, including the use of video and web-streaming as effective communications tools.

Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position would be attained through a degree or diploma in marketing, communications, journalism, new media communications or a related field of study, combined with several years of communications experience in the public or private sector. Membership in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) or a similar professional organization is beneficial.

What we offer:

  • Dynamic, challenging work for talented individuals;
  • Positive, inclusive work environments;
  • Flexible work arrangements;
  • A competitive salary;
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including pension;
  • Training and support;
  • Vacation, scheduled days off (SDO) and other types of leave; and
  • Advancement opportunities.

Our ministry and the public service values are respect and integrity, serving citizens, excellence and innovation, and working as one team. Our employees enjoy a work-life balance in a ministry that supports creativity, learning and career development opportunities.
