Job Summary:
Reporting to the Sr. Director, CEHS , the Sr. Health & Safety Advisor drawing on their extensive experience is responsible for assisting in the development, maintenance and execution of UFA Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) Management System. Based on their specific area of expertise the Sr. Health and Safety Advisor will also lead in the creation of specialized health and safety programs and initiatives including their design, development and implementation. In addition, they will be responsible for support and implementation of programs and assessments in their assigned region/ area.
Working remote from a home office, this position will primarily cover Eastern Alberta, Saskatchewan & Manitoba (ideal location is central Saskatchewan). The role will work across various business lines that include agricultural retail, downstream petroleum cardlock and bulk deliveries, fertilizer distribution and construction, to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities: Minimize corporate environmental, health and safety liability through effective implementation of the UFA Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS). Support the sites with technical expertise to integrate EH&S into operations. Assist Business Units in the planning, designing, implementing and embedding of environment, health and safety processes. Ensure that advice presented to Business Units is accurate and current by maintaining the required skill level through continuous learning and development of health and safety processes. Build relationships with Regulators and Investigators. Audit/assess sites to generate recommendations for improvement of environment, health and safety processes. Follow through to completion/ implementation of recommendations identified through incident investigations, inspections and audit/assessment results Administer assigned projects such as MSDS database, Electronic Learning delivery systems, Emergency contact information system, Incident Management System, legislative updating process, etc. Responsible for the implementation of the Environment, Health and Safety Management System through hazard identification, hazard control, document management, training, and emergency response processes. Monitor the effectiveness of the Environment, Health and Safety Management System through inspection, incident investigation, non-conformance, corrective action and auditing processes. Review the Environment, Health and Safety Management System to ensure the processes stay current by keeping up to date on legislative changes. Conduct site and agency partners documentation and site assessments, identifying gaps and opportunities through recommendations for improvements Specialty focus may include one or more of the following functions as a technical expert: Lead and facilitate Level 3 Incident Investigations, debrief with senior management and facilitate action plans. Be the main point of contact with authorities and any OHS investigations Lead the Duty Officer program, emergency response planning and related programs Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and associated transportation programs and regulations Construction and associated programs (i.e. subcontractor management, contractor qualifications and related client requirements) Lead both internal COR and external COR/SECOR certification, auditing programs across the enterprise (including any affiliated companies, agencies and contractors) Provide mentoring and coaching to the team members, especially in their specific area of expertise (i.e. investigations, emergency response planning, construction, material handling, AWSA, etc.)
Qualifications: University degree and/or postsecondary Occupational Health and Safety education with 7+ years’ relevant experience. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or equivalent, experience in hazardous material handling, fire and/or spill response an asset. Formal training in investigations with a focus on root causes is required Understanding the principles of Health and Safety and the ability to apply those principles to real situations Strong written and technical skills Strong proficiency with Microsoft Suite of products and other software applications Strong written communication and verbal communication skills Ability to apply knowledge, influence, develop plans and coach others in the use of those plans. 50% travel anticipated to visit sites within Western Canada, comes with company vehicle.
This is a safety sensitive position as it will be on site at UFA facilities and will be using UFA material handling equipment. The successful applicant will be required to pass (negative result) a drug and alcohol screening test as a condition of employment.
