About the role
Alberta Newsprint Company (ANC), a joint venture of the Stern Group and West Fraser Timber Company Ltd., is a leading manufacturer of premium paper products. Located in Whitecourt, and operating with a non-unionized workforce, the firm’s paper mill—the first in Alberta—produces paper of such high quality that it has become the standard by which other paper products manufactured in North America are measured. This position supports both employees and managers while providing payroll and pension administration, general payroll accounting support, and assistance with certain human resources functions in support of the Human Resources department. We are looking for a detail-focused, results-oriented owner of the ANC payroll function.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Prepare and process semi-monthly payroll for multiple employee groups with varying pay structures.
- Maintain payroll records and ensure accurate employee data entry.
- Ensure compliance with all employment standards and regulatory guidelines.
- Review and balance all payroll-related deductions (i.e., burdens, taxes, statutory remittances, etc.) and participate in variance analysis endeavours.
- Support benefit administration, including new hire set-up, terminations, life event changes, and monthly premium reconciliation.
- Assist with pension plan administration, including enrollment tracking, contribution monitoring, and reporting to actuaries and regulatory bodies (e.g., CRA, WCB, etc.).
- Collaborate with internal departments to resolve payroll and benefit inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Own delivery of year-end requirements including T4s, reconciliations, budget, and audit responses related to payroll.
- Provide occasional backup support for HR department.
- Other duties, as required.
What you will bring to the role:
- 1-3+ years of payroll administration experience, preferably in a UKG environment.
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in related field.
- Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills.
- High attention to detail and deadlines.
- A Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification, or working towards, is desired.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- Collaborative team player with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to act with the required discretion when handling confidential information.
