Looking for a new and rewarding leadership opportunity? We are seeking a Foreperson, Surface Track to join our team.
The Foreperson Surface Track will be responsible for supervising the work performed in the Surface Track Maintenance area that involves the rehabilitation, maintenance, and construction of all streetcar track-related work. The Foreperson will also plan, schedule, direct and control maintenance activities within the department. The incumbent supervises and instructs unionized employees and/or contractors on safe work methods and habits and may conduct training sessions, investigations, inspections and quality audits. The role also entails administrative tasks such as timekeeping, preparing and maintaining records, generating reports, summaries, etc.
What You Will Do
- The incumbent assists in the co-ordination, planning and scheduling of the track work.
- Monitor and track information, data, records, and/or equipment inventory, following up, and updating as required.
- Assist and prepare reports, estimates, employee related documents, schedules, inventory, etc., and distribute to appropriate parties in accordance with established standards.
- Provide assistance in the preparation, development, monitoring, or other needs for a given project or organizational unit.
- Ensure employees are appropriately trained on aspects of work, policies, and safety, and that track maintenance projects are aligned with standards.
- Liaise with colleagues, support staff, other departments, and external customers/stakeholders concerning routine matters related to the work assigned.
- Plan, adjust, and project work, schedules, costs, and systems as needed.
- Verify the accuracy, quality, reliability, functionality, system requirements, and/or specifications are met in a given process, document, piece of equipment, system, or work method.
- Complete tasks required to manage employees (administrative duties) along with approving or authorizing requests which are standard and meet related policy expectations and compliance regulations.
- Inspect equipment items and rebuild or improve functionality through forming, bending, welding, or other methods of fabrication.
- construct and maintain special and tangent trackwork which involves the excavation and removal of old trackwork; installation and alignment of trackwork and ballast to surveyor’s grade and alignment; replacing track accessories; welding of running rail joints; installing anchor bolts, tie plates, rail fasteners and grout pads.

What Qualifications Do You Bring

Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.

Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering or Civil Technology in addition to supervisory experience in a related field, is considered an asset.

Specialized knowledge of track and road inspection, construction, maintenance and repair standards, procedures and practices, combined with working knowledge of related trades.

Managing and motivating a unionized workforce through good people skills, and demonstrated ability to work with unionized workforces in a leadership role.

Innovative thinking and committed to driving change within the team.

Familiarity with fundamental budgeting concepts, and good working knowledge of computers and relevant applications.

Working knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, relevant government legislation.

Ability to make decisions supported by sound judgement, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.

A valid Province of Ontario class ‘G’ driver’s licence with the ability to upgrade to a class ‘DZ’ licence; may be required to use own automobile when inspecting work locations.
