YOUTH SERVICE SPECIALIST, EmpowHER

Summary The EmpowHER project aims to improve communities' social, economic, and environmental well-being through local action by working collaboratively with 320 youth (ages 12 – 30) from underserved communities in Ontario. Achēv will work with partners and the target population by introducing them to various service and volunteer opportunities in their communities, providing training, and collaborating in co-creating service projects that respond to identified community needs.

The Youth Service Specialist will focus on assisting with event planning, direct delivery of program activities, and assist in the project evaluation, one-on-one counselling, group assessments, and volunteer coordination. In addition, the Youth Service Specialist will assist in scheduling and facilitating weekly training, including creating zoom meetings, sending reminders, making certifications, among others. For participant recruitment and monitoring, the Youth Service Specialist will create the marketing materials to attract new participants, develop materials to keep participants engaged, record engagement activities, and monitor and record volunteer hours.

One of the primary areas of coaching offered to the youth clientele under EmpowHER pertains to Civic Action and Civic Engagement, and therefore the incumbent must be non-partisan and well versed in Canadian Governance and Employment Laws that govern volunteerism. In addition, we expect the EmpowHER project to be a safe space for LGBTQ2S+ youth.

Duties And Responsibilities Recruitment & Outreach:

  • Assist the Project Coordinator with outreach, marketing, recruitment & screening of applicants, ensuring that intake and screening targets are met on a weekly basis and that a high quality of service is provided to all youth participants
  • Develop and deliver outreach-oriented presentations to potential community partners in addition to other outreach strategies to ensure consistent program visibility and relationship development in the community
  • Implement the planned marketing strategies among high-schools, universities, community partners, and at community events

Project Implementation

  • Provide group & individual coaching/counselling regarding action planning, community resources, and volunteer coordination
  • Manage and foster relationships pertaining to internal and external stakeholders including employers/organizations to develop volunteer opportunities, and monitoring youth at their volunteer placements as needed
  • In conjunction with Project Coordinator, review monthly workshop schedule, secure guest speakers, and ensure the timely delivery of required workshops/trainings, making adjustments to meet participant needs
  • Assist in the ongoing development and effective implementation of program related policies and procedures that ensure program guidelines are followed
  • Assist Project Coordinator in contacting participants after each cohort ends to offer further individual assistance and to determine participants’ achievements in relation to their plans
  • Teach Canadian Governance and Civic Engagement as needed
  • Coach program participants on community and corporate event planning

Administrative Tasks

  • Assist with administrative tasks such as tracking, submitting attendance, communication with clients as well as community organizations and employers in adherence to agency privacy and confidentiality policies
  • Oversee timely and accurate submission of all statistical and program information to be used in internal and external reports
  • Assist with administrative tasks associated with client recruitment, event management, and volunteer placements

Other

  • Maintain positive and clear communication with other team members to facilitate teamwork, successful target management and customer service
  • Assess and address project concerns and changing project needs in a timely manner in conjunction with Project Coordinator
  • Assist with evaluating progress, identifying newcomer youth needs
  • Answer inquiries by phone or email
  • Flex work hours during evenings and weekends to adequately support project participants outside their regular school hours
  • Assist with the delivery of supplies to participants as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Completion of a post-secondary University Degree or College Diploma in social services or related experience
  • 2-3 years of experience working directly with and engaging youth, including those that are newcomer women/girls or facing barriers
  • Experience in workshop facilitation, with knowledge of life skills, employability/essential skills and leadership development
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide coaching to youth facing barriers and motivating youth to develop a plan of action
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in diverse social media platforms, including traditional outreach and marketing
  • Knowledge of local youth service organizations, associations and networks in Peel and surrounding areas
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills including the ability to support and encourage youth volunteerism, collaborate, build relationships, and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Volunteer placement and event planning & management experience would be considered an asset
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities effectively within a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent computer skills including experience with graphic design platforms such as Canva/Photoshop, webinar software, including Microsoft Office, Outlook, and other virtual platforms
  • Must be non-partisan and well versed in Canadian Governance and Employment Laws that govern volunteerism
  • Understanding of community needs and civic engagement opportunities
  • Ability to learn new technology tools such as the Achēv’s parallel data management system
  • Experience with various administrative tasks such as data entry, tracking, data collection, report writing, etc.
  • Able to work with diverse populations and create psychologically safe environment for project participants
  • Must be willing to travel throughout Ontario pending project needs
  • Provision of a Criminal Reference Check if required for specific funder/program demands

Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. For example, a typical week fluctuates but sees a 4:00PM to 10:00PM shift multiple times per week for the delivery of workshops outside of students’ schedules. For weekends, you may be required to work 1-2 or more Saturdays and/or Sundays per month. Flexibility is required to accommodate participant availability.
