About the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs team at Unity Health
Corporate Communications and Public Affairs is a group of communications advisors, social media advisors, web programmers and media relations specialists. We’re also a fun, collaborative group of individuals who support each other in our work and are always ready to pitch in to help a colleague. Together, we are responsible for reputation management, internal and external communications, branding, media relations, digital media, government and stakeholder relations and community engagement. The department works across the network and works collaboratively with the network’s two foundations.

About the Senior Communications Advisor role at Unity Health
As a Senior Communications Advisor within the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs team, you will play an integral role in contributing to Unity Health’s local, national and international reputation. This role will report to the Director of Media and External Communications and work closely with the Corporate Communications and Strategic Communications teams for the duration of a maternity leave.

The successful candidate will serve as communications lead for three key strategic areas, including Indigenous Health, Brain and Heart and Research. Research at Unity Health Toronto includes the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. Our full affiliation with the University of Toronto, Canada's largest research entity, underscores our commitment to research excellence.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain close working relationships with senior leaders and executives of assigned client groups providing ongoing communications counsel and support
  • Develop and implement focused communications plans for major programs, initiatives and projects within specific portfolios that complement the network’s overall communications strategy and strategic direction
  • Lead the annual strategic communications planning and development of portfolio-specific strategies that align with the department’s overarching communications strategy and corporate priorities
  • Develop measurement tools to evaluate impact of communications strategies for assigned portfolios
  • Identify, write and produce compelling stories and social media content that aligns to the strategic priorities of the network and advances the brand and reputation of Unity Health
  • Lead the planning, coordinating and execution for special events that could include government announcements, grand openings of new space, and tours of our facilities with key external stakeholders
  • Identify media opportunities and assist media relations team
  • Manage external vendors as needed
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree/diploma in journalism, public relations, communications, or related area
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of relevant experience required
  • Extensive knowledge of communications trends and ability to foresee newsworthy stories
  • Exceptional writer and editor; must have ability to ensure error free materials
  • Excellent verbal communications skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including executives and board members and journalists
  • Results orientated, self-directed and independent, with the ability to balance multifaceted projects and competing priorities
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure; mature judgement for assessing difficult situations
  • Result oriented, self-directed, outstanding organization and time management skills
  • High energy, flexibility and the ability to work effectively in a fast pace environment
