The Ministry of Highways is seeking a highly motivated individual with excellent interpersonal, communication, teamwork skills, and a willingness to learn, to join the Environment Unit in the Safety and Environment Resource Branch. One position is available in Saskatoon. As an Environmental Specialist, you will form part of a provincial team that serves a wide range of stakeholders, including, but not limited to, Ministry staff, contractors, and consultants.
As an Environmental Specialist, you will be responsible for:
- Providing expert advice and training to internal and external stakeholders on all environmental responsibilities in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of highways, culverts, bridges, and associated works. These include the protection of water quality, air quality, animal, bird, and aquatic habitats, sensitive species, heritage considerations, invasive plant control, salt storage and management, spill management and reporting;
- Having a working knowledge of applicable federal and provincial environmental regulations and legislation, in particular focused on working around water, and in relation to erosion and sediment control;
- Assisting internal and external stakeholders with environmental screenings, project proposals, permit applications, impact mitigation planning, and corrective action planning;
- Undertaking field inspections to confirm compliance with the Ministry's policies, regulatory permits and relevant legislation, and provide constructive solutions, focused advice and feedback to internal and external stakeholders;
- Undertaking technical research, jurisdictional scans, and developing guidance documents, operational policies, practices, and standards; and
- Liaising with federal and provincial regulatory agencies and other external stakeholders.
The successful candidate must be able to travel extensively, especially in the summer construction months, with an expectation of approximately 50% of the time, in remote areas, and under potentially unpredictable weather conditions.
Typically, the knowledge and abilities required for this position would be obtained through successful completion of an Applied Sciences and Technology Diploma in Engineering or Environmental Science, and several years' experience in environmental management and protection. An erosion and sediment control practitioner designation will be considered an asset. Candidates must clearly identify in their cover letter or resume where they gained their knowledge and experience.
