About the role
The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions, working on everything from dinosaur skins to mine remediation and from cancer treatments to cutting-edge electronics.
The Canadian Light Source has an opportunity for post-secondary students to work up to 10 hours per week, on a casual basis, as an outreach student/tour guide. We are looking for a diverse team of students who are passionate about science to share the research conducted at our facility with the public. This position is available for both the fall and spring 2024/2025 school terms.
As members of the Outreach team, reporting to the Communications Coordinator and as part of the Executive Support Office, Outreach Students provide tours, highlighting the range and depth of CLS research, and also assist with occasional educational and public events. We are looking for students with a flexible schedule who are available to work primarily during business hours on weekdays (and during the occasional evening or weekend). Students typically work anywhere from 1 to 5 hours per week.
This position offers flexible work hours that accommodate your schedule. You can select which tours you lead based on your availability. Most tours take place during business hours on weekdays.
Responsibilities:
- Provide tours to public audiences and school groups
- Assist in the delivery of special events
- May be assigned organizational/administrative support tasks to help organize tours
Qualifications:

Undergraduate or graduate student

Friendly and outgoing: you must love people

Strong verbal communication skills

Ability to understand complex ideas and communicate them simply

Ability to deal personably and professionally with different audience types is essential

Previous public speaking experience is an asset
Pay: Pay will depend on the student’s year of study. Current rates are as follows:
First Year: $17.75/hr.
Second Year: $18.43/hr.
Third Year: $19.46/hr.
Fourth Year: $20.48/hr.
Fifth Year: $21.50/hr.
