Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for one (1) permanent full-time position for a Transit Trainer in the Employee Support & Development Division of Halifax Transit.

Under the general supervision of the Senior Transit Trainer, the Transit Trainer will deliver training and driving instruction to employees of Halifax Transit in conjunction with other Transit Trainers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinates and conducts classroom and driving training to new and current transit bus operators.
- Assists in the development of training and development programs for operators, service supervisors and transit employees.
- Conducts transit employee orientations.
- Assists in administering applicant testing during recruitment process.
- Assists with candidate interviews.
- Monitors and evaluates progress of new recruits during training and makes recommendations for improvement.
- Monitors and evaluates probationary employees in the safe provision of service, defensive driving techniques, customer interactions, and Halifax Transit policy.
- Provides documentation for retraining or termination of personnel.
- Conducts continuous operator training, defensive driving, customer service as well as other refresher or driver enhancement training.
- Conducts First Aid program for all transit employees.
- Maintains employee driver training records.
- Assists in the development of new courses; updates training program ensuring all training meets legislative and legal requirements.
- Tests and qualifies Class 2 licenses under the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act appropriate regulating body.
- Assists in developing policies and procedures as it applies to new equipment and/or activities so that training and safety requirements are met.
- Conducts bus route testing for potential new routes to determine whether the route is safe for all transit operators.
- Collaborates with Accident & Claims Investigation Coordinator to implement recommendations for retraining or adjust training based on trends and occurrences.
- Provides on-going information to employees regarding driving and safety issues through a variety of media.
- Conducts coaching and counselling sessions with all professional drivers.
- Drives a transit bus when required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent.
- 3-5 years' experience in the Transit industry as an Operator.
- One-year experience in administering training programs and/or adult education.
- Valid Class 2 driver’s license.
- First Aid & CPR Instructor certification would be an asset.
- Instructor certifications in Motor Vehicle Class 2 Licensing, Professional Driver Improvement Course and Customer Service Training considered an asset.
- Experience in a supervisory position in a unionized environment considered an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills.
- Must be willing to complete the Instructor’s course in Bus Operator Training or equivalent course.
- Ability to conduct effective classroom and field training programs.
- Ability to exercise sound, expert, independent judgement and initiative with policy guidelines.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Intermediate to Advanced level proficiency in PowerPoint.
- Experience with Transit specific applications would be an asset.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
Please note - Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Permanent, full-time.
HOURS OF WORK: 35 Hours per Week, Monday to Friday. Additional hours may be required due to operational requirements.
SALARY: NU 5 ($66,830 - $78,625). Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
WORK LOCATION: Burnside Transit Centre, 200 Ilsley Avenue, Dartmouth, NS and Ragged Lake Transit Centre, 80 Grassy Lake Drive, Halifax, NS.
