About the role

We are hiring for this position out of our Toronto office. Successful candidates who apply outside of these areas will be expected to relocate and reside in a location that is within a commutable distance.

Role Overview The role is focused on managing a diverse portfolio of distressed loans, including those in default, with responsibilities spanning early intervention, arrears management, legal enforcement, and risk mitigation. This includes coordinating with borrowers, trustees, legal counsel, and third-party servicers to ensure effective management of delinquent accounts, particularly in commercial multifamily residential. The individual collaborates closely with regional offices and underwriters to support the realization process and ensure timely access to critical file data. They are responsible for initiating and overseeing legal proceedings, engaging and managing external professionals such as solicitors, receivers, appraisers, and realtors.

A key aspect of the role involves analyzing reports to guide decision-making and track the performance of enforced properties. The position also includes monitoring emerging credit risks, collaborating with account managers to develop tailored workout strategies for distressed loans, maintaining watchlists, and producing regular reports on delinquencies, provisions, and CMHC arrears. Additional duties include conducting fire and flood exposure assessments for commercial mortgages, managing borrower payments and discharges, and overseeing insurance reporting and CMHC claims processing.

Qualifications

  • Holds a bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or a related discipline.
  • Brings over five years of experience in credit risk or financial services.
  • Demonstrated expertise in default management, with a focus on commercial and residential real estate.
  • Well-versed in regulatory requirements governing foreclosures, credit scoring, and collections practices.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, with intermediate to advanced capabilities.
  • Experience in construction financing an asset.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Oversee arrears management by coordinating with borrowers, trustees, legal counsel, and handling collection activities.
  • Collaborate with regional offices to ensure timely receipt of critical file data and support the realization process; maintain communication with underwriters and regional managers.
  • Monitor third-party servicers to ensure effective collection of delinquent single-family and consumer lending accounts.
  • Initiate and manage legal proceedings, including engaging solicitors, receivers, appraisers, property managers, and realtors.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of external professionals involved in enforcement and recovery processes.
  • Review and analyze reports from realtors, receivers, appraisers, and property managers to inform decision-making.
  • Identify and monitor emerging credit risks, maintain and report on high-risk loans (watchlist).
  • Administer and track watchlist and default loan portfolios.
  • Maintain and update the insurance report on a quarterly basis.
  • Track sales performance of enforced properties, ensuring regular updates and marketing reports from realtors.
  • Conduct fire and flood exposure assessments for commercial mortgage properties.
  • Prepare and deliver reports on delinquencies, watchlist loans, provisions/write-offs, CMHC arrears, and other key metrics.
  • Manage borrower payments, loan discharges, fee applications, invoice reconciliation, and CMHC claims processing.

About The Work Environment Peoples Group offers a flexible and hybrid work environment. In this role you will work a combination of in-office and remotely from home. Typically, you'll be working regular business hours, Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 4:30pm with flexibility around start/end times.
