Chief Enterprise Architect

Position Highlights
The role of the Chief Enterprise Architect (CEA) is to guide the organization by planning technology architecture, directions
and solutions to meet BC Hydro’s business strategy, and to respond to relevant technology trends impacting the
enterprise’s processes and systems. The CEA is also responsible for leading the effort to develop, maintain, govern and
evolve the Enterprise Architecture (EA) program, roadmaps and strategies and for leading the effective integration of these
processes with other related business and technology processes.
What you'll do
The CEA is expected to work closely with the Business Units leadership team, and project teams to understand their needs
and is responsible for providing strategic technology directions aligned with business goals. Act as design authority to
maximize yield on technology investments and reduce cyber, technical and business risks. As the senior member and
leader of the EA team, the CEA will address the people, process, technology and information aspects of each business
problem to specify complete solution architectures.
The CEA manages a team of Enterprise Architects and reports to the Chief Information Officer.
Scope
From a technology perspective, the scope of enterprise architecture covers the full technology stack including cloud
applications, infrastructure, telecom, data/information/analytics, user experience, security, and operational technologies.
The full lifecycle of technology includes strategy, planning, design, build/stabilize/deploy, operate, and sustain. In this
lifecycle, the CEA is expected to provide leadership in technology strategy and planning, and provide direct oversight in
design and plan duties:
- Works with Business and Technology leadership to plan and integrate short- and long-term technology options into an
overall EA strategy and plan
- Analyzes the existing business IT/OT landscape to identify key deficiencies and provide recommendations for
enhancement.
- Analyzes industry, technology and market trends to determine their potential impacts on the enterprise's strategy and
architecture requirements
- Assesses options, risks and cost-benefit as it pertains to data architecture, security, and other technology issues
- Provides ongoing evaluation of technology solutions and capabilities to ensure alignment with business objectives and
identify areas of risks and opportunities
- Creates and reviews architecture models for business processes and services
- Conducts studies within and outside organization to ensure compliance with standards and currency with industry security
norms
- Ensures Architecture Compliance: Monitors and enforces compliance with architectural standards, policies, and
governance frameworks across all technology initiatives.
- Develops Capability Models and Heatmaps: Maps business capabilities to technology assets to identify redundancies,
gaps, and opportunities for optimization.
- Leads Architecture Maturity Assessments: Conducts periodic assessments of the organization’s architectural maturity and
develops improvement roadmaps.
- Integrates Sustainability and Resilience: Embeds principles of environmental sustainability, resilience, and scalability into
architectural planning and decision-making.
- Mentors and Develops Architecture Talent: Builds internal capability by mentoring architects and fostering a community of
practice across domains.
- Aligns with Regulatory and Industry Standards: Ensures architectural practices align with industry frameworks and
regulatory requirements.
Standards and Guidelines

Leads and facilitates the creation of governing principles to guide solution decision making for the enterprise

Leads the development of an implementation plan for the EA, based on business requirements and IT/OT strategies

Leads the development, documentation, evolution, and adherence to, standards, guidelines, and quality of service criteria
Enterprise Architecture Management
- Manages the EA team consisting of 5 to 10 employee and contractor architects focused on specific domains (e.g.,
infrastructure, cybersecurity, applications, data/analytics).
- Promotes the EA process, outcomes and results to the organization, including to the enterprise's Technology and
Business leaders
- Serves as the point of contact for all things relating to EA
- Collaborates with program/project teams to reconcile solutions to architecture
- Collaborates with Directors within and outside Technology team to ensure there is alignment for optimal outcomes
- Identifies organizational requirements for the resources, structures and cultural changes necessary to support the EA
- Oversees the effective communication of all EA artifacts
What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering required. An advanced degree
(masters or doctorate) in a related discipline is an asset. Business management training is an asset.
- 10+ years of relevant work experience in large enterprise environments with at least 5 years’ experience associated with
architecture and the development of technology strategies, visions, roadmaps and implementation plans.
- Professional architecture certification (e.g., ISACA, OpenGroup, Zachman) or domain architecture certifications (e.g.,
product-specific solution architect certification) would be an asset.
- 5 years’ management experience in a large-scale technology environment, providing leadership and influence at senior
management and executive levels.
Skills
- Knowledge of Enterprise Architecture workflow, including deliverables such as: statement of business outcomes, use
cases, valuation frameworks, Architecture vision, roadmaps, reference architectures.
- Demonstrated expertise in applying architectural disciplines, including
- The ability to translate business needs into EA requirements
- The ability to balance the long-term (or "big picture") and short-term implications of individual decisions
- The ability to integrate subject-area strategies and plans to meet organizational requirements and priorities.
- The ability to estimate and articulate the impact of EA alternatives in both financial and nonfinancial terms
- The ability to identify potentially relevant trends and emerging technologies, forecast their impact and utility, and adjust
strategies, standards and plans accordingly
- Knowledge of electric utility business functions and technology solutions (including both information technologies and
operational technologies) would be an asset.
- Demonstrated experience applying management disciplines, including financial analysis and modeling, budgeting,
resource planning, personnel management, business process management and continuous improvement.
- Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills, including:
- Consultation, teamwork, facilitation and negotiation skills
- Excellent analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven experience leading digital modernization initiatives, including cloud adoption, data-driven decision-making, and
agile delivery models.
- Understanding of how technology can enable new business models, revenue streams, and operational efficiencies.
- Experience establishing and leading architecture review boards, standards committees, and governance frameworks.
- Ability to assess and mitigate risks related to cybersecurity, data privacy, and regulatory compliance through architectural
design.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to executive stakeholders and board-level audiences.
- Familiarity with integrating IT and OT systems, especially in regulated or asset-intensive industries like utilities.
- Knowledge of green IT practices and how to design architectures that support environmental and social responsibility.
- Awareness of ethical considerations in technology design, including bias, transparency, and accessibility.
