There is an opportunity for this to be a full-time teleworking position. Work arrangements will be discussed with hiring managers per departmental guidelines. Why is this role important? Reporting to the Director, Technological Development, you’ll join the Digital Media team where a major initiative is underway to modernize Radio-Canada’s digital ecosystem and make it more resilient in an evolving media environment. This work will be performed in close co-operation with various departments and will help build the public broadcaster’s future.

How You Will Make An Impact

  • Manage the development team, supporting them on all technical aspects of the product in order to achieve the objectives and priorities set by leadership.
  • Advise the leadership and management teams in analyzing, designing, planning and evaluating work in advance of projects.
  • Devise technical solutions in conjunction with architects, development leadership and other members of the development team.
  • Act as a partner to Digital Media directors and managers to ensure a consistent management approach.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, leading by example. Act as a leader and ambassador in implementing change and new ways of working.
  • Take a leadership role in identifying, communicating and resolving issues encountered. Try to resolve issues before escalating them to the relevant managers.
  • Be proactive in bringing ideas and solutions for improving how we work and achieving our goals, and actively participate in implementing them with leadership.
  • Be accountable for the quality and overall communication of technical aspects relating to the entire platform.
  • Raise potential human and technical challenges with leadership; suggest solutions to those challenges. Try to resolve issues before escalating them to the relevant managers.
  • Conduct proactive monitoring of industry best practices with a view to recommending enhancements to product workflows.
  • Based on portfolio technical needs, guide technology choices as well as the training plans needed to implement those choices.
  • Oversee the hiring of talent for the team; support the hiring process in related fields.
  • Be responsible for setting objectives and evaluating the performance of the developers reporting to you.
  • Take charge of onboarding new talent in their respective teams.
  • Support leadership in deciding who to assign to projects; advocate for the team’s needs when leadership makes assignment choices.
  • Monitor your employees’ progress and engage in coaching/mentoring activities.
  • Help promote the product internally and externally.

We Are Looking For Candidates With The Following

  • At least three to five years’ experience leading a team — either a team focused on a specific product or area of expertise, or a cross-functional one.
  • Ability to work well in a team and communicate effectively.
  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and uncertainty.
  • Strong ability to explain technical concepts to non-experts.
  • Outstanding judgment, initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to create buy-in and offer an open, inclusive and collaborative work environment.
  • Thoroughness, independence and strong sense of ownership.
  • Knowledge of best practices in digital development workflows.
  • Ability to manage complex situations involving strategic, financial, political, operational and human components.
  • Ability to ask the right questions at the right time.
  • Fluency in English and French.

Please note this is a 12-month contract position, renewable annually. This regular position is not a consulting assignment but a long-term opportunity with attractive CBC/Radio-Canada employee benefits.
