About Us
The Canadian Severe Storms Laboratory (CSSL) was founded in 2024 as a partnership between Western University and social impact fund ImpactWX, beginning a new era in severe storms research in Canada and strengthening Canada’s reputation globally as a leader in the field.
The CSSL is the authoritative source for Canadian severe convective storms data and research. Projects under the CSSL umbrella include the Northern Tornadoes Project, the Northern Hail Project and the new Northern Mesonet Project. We undertake the collection of data, documentation of events, and pursuit of research that enhances our understanding of severe convective storms and their impacts, and allows the development of innovative techniques and tools.

Responsibilities
The Research Associate (Meteorolgoist) will apply their expertise and knowledge expertise to carry out meterological investigations under the direction of the Executive Director of the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP). The incumbent will be responsible for assisting with satellite-based wind damage analyses for historical and near real-time events. In addition, the Research Associate will contribute to data collection and meteorological analyses for NTP-related initiatives as needed, and assist with project reports and scientifc manuscripts.
This position will be filled by reappointment.
Qualifications
Education:
- Master's degree inatmospheric science or equivalent required.
Experience:
-
working experience in a related academic research environment, knowledge in severe weather preferred.
Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

Demonstrated working knowledge of relevant scientific/research principles
-
Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit

Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users, and to complete detailed analytics and reports

Advanced skills in software and applications used to produce and analyze research outcomes
-
Ability to provide solutions and ideas for improvement by using imaginative approaches where constructive thinking and innovation are required

Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy- Familiarity with University research policies and practices

Ability to adhere to legislated safety requirements and Western safety policies

Commitment to ongoing professional development with a desire to take on new challenges
