About the role

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) invites applicants for a full-time permanent Senior Manager, Accounting. The start date for the role will commence at a time to be determined, as early as August 1, at EIPS Central Administration building in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road (in-office full-time).

The Division

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Financial Services, the Senior Manager, Accounting oversees the team responsible for day-to-day financial processing (including accounts payable, receivable, and cash management), external compliance reporting, including the Division’s annual audited financial statements, and internal reporting activities. These functions are critical to ensuring the organization operates effectively and meets all legislative and governance requirements.

This is a new position as a result of retirement and restructure within the Financial Services department.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Supervise and mentor a team of four to five staff, including performance assessment and recruitment (as needed).
  • Ensure timely accounts payable and accounts receivable practices with appropriate internal controls in place, delivered in an efficient manner.
  • Safeguard cash balances at the school board, including recommending investments and projecting balances across multiple accounts.
  • Lead the external audit, including audit planning, scheduling, and internal deadline development. Coordinate development and review of all financial statements, schedules, and notes. Primary point of contact for all audit questions and concerns.
  • Responsible for coordinating production of internal quarterly unaudited financial reports.
  • Ensure appropriate public expense transparency reporting as per internal policy and government recommendations.
  • Comply with and provide recommendations for changes to financial administrative procedures.
  • Support staff in accurately recording prepaid expenses, accruals, and other journal entries.
  • Ensure compliance with public sector accounting board standards, including research and implementation of new standards.
  • Responsible for various government compliance reporting, such as monthly provincial expense reporting, WCB premium reporting, and issuing T4As annually.
  • Expert on the school board’s financial software.
  • Manage the school board’s charitable status, including issuance of tax receipts and annual charity return.
  • Supervise capital asset accounting and ensure compliance with related accounting standards.
  • Support the Director, Financial Services in projecting financial results throughout the year.

The Candidate

EIPS seeks candidates who possess the following:

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
  • Minimum seven years related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience with Public Sector Accounting Board standards and external audit.
  • Financial experience in an education setting is considered an asset.
  • Supervision experience is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical, organization, prioritization and time management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to work well as a team player.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, including applying rational and creative responses when problem-solving.
  • Excellent Excel skills, and the ability to remain current with contemporary and emerging technologies used by the division.
