Hours: Monday to Friday; 8:00am – 5:00pm

Summary:
The Accounting Assistant Manager oversees daily accounting operations at Miller Waste Systems, including journal entries, reconciliations, and month/year-end close. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, supervises and mentors a team of accountants, and serves as a key point of contact for external auditors and internal stakeholders. The Assistant Manager also helps improve internal processes and controls. Ideal candidates have strong technical skills, at least three years of leadership experience, and thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities:
In the position of Accounting Assistant Manager your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Prepare and review journal entries for all applicable companies or lines of business, in compliance with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) and GAAP.
  • Support and coordinate the month-end and year-end processes to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Provide daily guidance and oversight to a team of accountants, acting as a resource for technical accounting questions and problem-solving.
  • Manage and supervise the accounting team to ensure accuracy, efficiency and compliance with internal policies and accounting principles.
  • Ensure all balance sheet reconciliations are completed and properly documented monthly, within monthly deadlines established by the Corporate Controller.
  • Collaborate with other departments to gather and analyze financial data, ensuring accuracy, timeliness and consistency of transactions and reports.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and enhance internal controls.
  • Ensure compliance with tax regulations, including HST and WSIB filings.
  • Participate in special projects and support ongoing system and process improvements.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors, responding to requests and preparing documentation.
  • Contribute to developing and implementing accounting policies and procedures.
  • Support the Corporate Controller with other projects or activities as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
  • CPA designation.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or lead capacity.
  • High proficiency in Excel and superior data analysis and data management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Great work ethic with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Positive attitude and adaptable to change within a rapidly growing organization.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain accounting matters to management and collaborate effectively with the Corporate Controller and across departments.
  • Team player with leadership abilities.
