About the role

The Opportunity

Keyano College’s Academic Success Center is currently seeking a Peer Tutor (Student Employee) to help students with tutoring. Peer tutors are scheduled up to 9 hours per week, based on the operational needs of the Academic Success Centre. Hours are scheduled between 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

Peer tutors are integral members of the Academic Success Centre team at Keyano College. In a collaborative environment, they work alongside staff and fellow peer tutors to provide valuable support to Keyano College students. Peer tutors are current students who have excelled in the subjects they tutor and are committed to sharing their knowledge to help others achieve similar academic success. Additionally, they assist in promoting effective study skills and techniques.

Peer tutors contribute to the success, progression, and retention of students in credit programs by offering both one-on-one and group tutoring sessions. They review and implement appropriate tutoring resources, while also modeling and encouraging effective learning strategies. The Peer Tutor Program facilitates connections between students and their peers, who possess expertise in various courses or academic programs. These tutors have successfully completed the relevant coursework and are able to clearly explain course concepts, providing supportive and effective tutoring assistance.

Peer tutors also assist with educational technology and will support students with computer programs such as Keyanomail, Moodle, Microsoft 365 (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams), textbook publisher platforms (e.g., TopHat, Pearson, McGraw-Hill), and other digital resources such as PDFs and eBooks. In addition, they will assist students with basic computer skills including file attachments (e.g., Emails, Moodle), document processing (e.g, PDFs, forms, and applications), file storage and sharing (e.g., OneDrive, File Manager).

Currently, we are currently needing Peer Tutors for the following topics:

  • English, Humanities & Writing

  • Business

  • Nursing & Allied Health

  • Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, etc.)

Note: this is not a remote or hybrid work opportunity, you will be required to work on campus in Fort McMurray, AB.

Duties & Responsibilities

Peer Tutors are expected to:

  • Work one-on-one or with small groups of students, clarifying concepts that have been covered during classroom instruction.
  • Conduct review sessions and facilitate study groups.
  • Explain concepts to fellow students clearly, checking for understanding.
  • Model problem-solving techniques.
  • Coach students in the skills necessary to be an effective learner.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to understand student challenges and ways to support learning.
  • Promote the Academic Success Centre to students.
  • Seek the help of Academic Success Centre staff appropriately as they tutor students.
  • Participate in training and mentorship sessions to develop their skills as effective tutors.
  • Participate in special projects and other duties, as required.
  • Be able to work a 3-hour shift to adhere to the CUPE Collective Agreement.

Qualifications

  • Must be a registered Keyano College student and legally allowed to work on-campus.
  • Minimum one year of post-secondary education completed.
  • B+ letter grade or higher in the course(s) that you wish to tutor.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly explain complex concepts.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and intercultural skills.
  • Able to work one-on-one in a collaborative and diverse environment that supports student learning.
  • Demonstrate organizational and study skills.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of technology and online platforms including Keyanomail, OneDrive, PDFs, Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom/MS Teams, Moodle, Self-Service and other software programs.
  • A commitment to promoting the Academic Success Centre’s equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging (EDIB) values and endeavours.
  • Strong ethics and adherence to Keyano College policies (e.g., Academic integrity policy) to avoid over-tutoring and ensure that student work is the student’s own.

Nice to have

  • College level coursework.
  • Tutoring or volunteer experience.
  • Knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP).

Compensation and Benefits
