About the role
Purpose Reporting to Director, Finance, the Staff Accountant (SA) is responsible for bill payment, bank reconciliations, general bookkeeping, assistance in preparation of financial statements and tax returns, as well as some administrative functions.
We are a small office, and it is expected that all team members have a flexible mindset in taking on a vast list of duties and responsibilities. Primarily, the candidate performs general finance functions as well as supporting other members of our financial team.
Key Areas of Accountability Accounting Responsibilities
- Process payments mostly through online banking; limited use of physical cheques
- Recording journal entries for review
- Liaising with vendors for payments, inquiries, and account setup
- Review and reconciliation of expense reports
- Prepare payroll calculations
- Preparation of CRA / WCB / Tax (T4) forms for review
- Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements
- Perform other duties as assigned
Administrative Assistant Duties
- Bank deposits
- Filing / download of bank and investments statements; management of general financial related correspondence
- Prepare documentation, reports, correspondence, and data entry requirements so that it is accurate, efficient and meets established business standards
- Coordinate and resolve day-to-day team and family member inquiries in a timely manner
- Ad hoc administrative duties as required
Other
- One team: Support and reduce workload of staff by contributing when needed. As a small office, there is an expectation to take on new and unanticipated tasks as the business requires
- Accurate and timely filing of all documents
- Assist in project management by following up with team members with clear and timely communication to ensure accountability to deadlines and targets
- Positive attitude in dealing with guests and colleagues which contributes to our office culture
Qualifications Education/Certifications/Knowledge:
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field
- Currently enrolled in or a desire to enroll in the CPA accounting designation program; is an asset
Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a financial / accounting role
- Preference will be shown for candidates with experience in a complex environment
Skills
- Strong communicator – written and verbal
- Effective problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills
- Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Outlook, and Word)
- Basic accounting and bookkeeping using QuickBooks
Attributes
- Strong sense of professionalism and demonstrates good judgement, especially pertaining to confidential matters
- Extremely organized, possesses attention to detail and accountable
- Proactive and adaptable
Compensation
- The base salary offered for this role is $65,000 to $75,000 per annum and can vary based on job-related expertise, qualifications, experience and internal equity.
