Hours: Part-Time | 10–20 Hours/Week
Location: 316 Spruce Street South, Timmins ON
Living Space is a low-barrier, non-profit emergency homelessness shelter offering 24/7 support for individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Lived experiences, culture, and perspectives are essential to fostering a healthy shelter environment for both staff and homeless community members on Treaty 9. Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and resourceful cook who can independently create meals for 60-80 people. This role requires strong meal planning skills, and the ability to adapt to limited/changing supplies. This role ensures food safety, minimizes waste, and creatively uses food donations to provide nutritious, cost-effective meals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, prepare, and serve meals for 60-80 people
- Wash dishes, clean kitchen surfaces, and maintain a tidy kitchen environment
- Assist with food donation pickups and storage
- Follow all food safety regulations and ensure proper handling, storage, and sanitation
- Communicate kitchen needs to Operations Manager and Team Lead
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and professional development
Requirements:
- Previous experience in a professional or community kitchen (large-scale food prep preferred)
- Valid Food Handler’s Certificate or equivalent food safety certification
- Ability to work under pressure, lift up to 30 lbs, and stand for long periods
- Organizational skills for inventory and meal planning
- Compassion and sensitivity to working with marginalized populations
- Confidentiality and professionalism
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check
Desired Skills:
- Ability to adjust meal plans based on available ingredients
- Strong initiative and ability to work independently
- Understanding of issues related to homelessness, poverty, and mental illness
- Ability to speak Cree or Ojibway or French is an asset.
