This posting will be used to fill 1 term full-time position working 75 hours bi-weekly from ASAP to March 31, 2027, and will also be used to fill anticipatory permanent full-time positions. It will establish a 12-month eligibility list which may be used to fill similar term and perm positions.

This job is based in the thriving and diverse city of Whitehorse in the beautiful Yukon.

Who we are

The Government of Yukon's Mental Wellness and Substance Use Services division is known for its innovative, holistic, trauma informed and culturally accessible approach to providing mental health and substance use supports to all Yukoners. The Outpatient Counselling Team is a supportive, dynamic, knowledgeable, and compassionate team with a strengths-based culture of peer consultation and work-life balance. We work closely with clients using a trauma-informed care perspective to provide a variety of clinical counselling, short-term counselling and group counselling supports.

This job is dynamic and can involve a mix in any given day, depending on the needs of the service and your interests – you will never feel bored working here! All of our counsellors and social workers participate in offering one on one counselling services as well as group offerings and may train on different groups and modalities depending on need and interests.

Your role

Working as a member of the Mental Wellness and Substance Use branch, specifically the Outpatient Counselling Team, the Clinical Counsellor provides assessments, case formulation, counselling, and case management to adults struggling with mental health problems, diagnosed mental illness, and/or problematic substance use and addiction. Within the context of a client-centered care model, the Clinical Counsellor will perform duties that support assessment, treatment planning, crisis intervention, aftercare services, outreach counselling, consultation, and individual and group programming to facilitate and coordinate client access to services and support clients to meet their counselling goals.

The Clinical Counsellors will work as part of a team of mental wellness professionals in Whitehorse and will have the responsibility to provide appropriate and specialized assessment and evidence-based treatment services for a full range of presenting issues, including concurrent disorders and complex trauma.

Essential qualifications

  • Completed master’s degree in social work, psychology, counselling, or other related disciplines; a PHD with an equivalent or related Masters or doctorate degree may also be considered
  • Recent experience providing assessment, treatment planning, and individual counselling to adults over the age of 18
  • Experience with facilitating group programming and/or workshops
  • Knowledge and practice facilitating DBT individual and group programming is an asset
  • Knowledge and practice providing trauma-focused counselling is an asset

  • Effective written and oral communication supported by strong conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to complete and maintain comprehensive clinical records.
  • Ability to employ evidence based strategies for different mental health presentations.

Conditions of employment

You must meet the following conditions before being hired, or within the time frame noted.

  • Verification of post-secondary degree(s)

  • Vulnerable Sector RCMP Security clearance

  • TB screening

  • Valid class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent

  • Standard First Aid and CPR within past 6 months

  • WHMIS 2015 (within one month of hire)

Job requirements

This job requires you to perform, and/or be exposed to, the following:

  • Regularly exposed to traumatized, depressed, anxious, suicidal, emotional, angry and potentially aggressive clients and/or caregivers.

  • Workplace stresses arise from counseling clients with addictions and mental health who are experiencing issues of a life crisis (serious illness, suicide, death, violence, relationship breakdowns, etc.)

  • May be exposed to wilderness and/or remote locations and environments; the incumbent may be required to travel within the Yukon on a regular basis during all weather conditions.

  • May be required to drive to work in alternate locations such as school, physician office, etc.
